Guide to Game Day: Vikings-Lions Week 9

The Vikings and Lions are scheduled to meet for the 118th overall time and fifth installment of the series at U.S. Bank Stadium.

Detroit claimed the first two games against Minnesota at the venue that opened in 2016, but the Vikings prevailed in 2018 and 2019.

Sunday will be the annual Salute to Service game. It is being presented by Polaris.

The Vikings and Lions players, coaches and staff will wear gear that honors active duty and reserve members of the military, veterans, fallen heroes and their family members for their courage and conviction in protecting freedoms.

On the airwaves

The noon (CT) game will be televised by CBS (WCCO in Minneapolis/St. Paul) and broadcast on the Vikings Radio Network (KFAN 100.3-FM/KTLK 1130-AM are the flagship stations).

Game-day promotions

Salute to Service

This year, a special tribute will be placed in U.S. Bank Stadium to honor 99 Fallen Heroes from Minnesota who have died in combat since the terrorist attacks on 9/11. A seat will be covered in honor of each of those casualties and be joined by the hero's name and a flag for the branch of service.

U.S. Central Command has reported more than 7,000 American military casualties while supporting Operation Enduring Freedom, Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation New Dawn since Sept. 11, 2001.

Other Salute to Service connections include the following:

Hy-Vee and the Vikings teamed up to surprise two military families with free groceries for a year and ultimate tailgating packages.

A picture of Timothy K. Ebert, Jr., in his Marine Corps Dress Blues will be among the cutouts. Ebert served 13-plus years in the Marines and loved the Vikings. He died during a final act of valor. The 34-year-old was fatally struck while trying to assist another motorist.

Eric Smith took a Water Break with Air Force graduate and Vikings long snapper Austin Cutting, who is fulfilling his military commitment in a new role.

Army Staff Sgt. Dylan Shallenberger grew up in Wisconsin but always repped the Vikings. The drill sergeant is instilling discipline in young soldiers and his love for the Vikings in his two young children. He has been named one of the 60 Greatest Vikings Fans.

National Anthem

The United States European Command Military Bands will perform the National Anthem in a pre-recorded video. The ensemble includes musicians from the United States Army Europe Band and Chorus stationed in Sembach, Germany; the United States Naval Forces Europe Band in Naples, Italy; and the United States Air Forces Europe Band in Ramstein, Germany.
