Vikings 2025 Schedule: 11 Intriguing Non-Division Matchups

The Vikings 2025 schedule was released Wednesday.

Minnesota is of course scheduled to play six contests against division rivals Chicago, Detroit and Green Bay. The Vikings are slated to open the 2025 season on the road in Chicago for Monday Night Football and will play their home opener on the Sunday Night Football stage against the Falcons.

The will play back-to-back international games for the first time in franchise history, facing the Steelers in Dublin during Week 4 and follow by meeting the Browns in London for Week 5. Both were already slated as road opponents for Minnesota.

The Vikings will host a Christmas Day game for just the third time in team history when they welcome the division rival Lions to U.S. Bank Stadium for a 3:30 p.m. (CT) kickoff, and once again they'll head to the Pacific Northwest to play Seattle. That one is slated for Week 13.

The 2025 slate of games promises plenty of top-level competition. Intriguing matchups between the Vikings and their non-division foes include the following:

Week 2 vs. Falcons | OLB Jonathan Greenard vs. T Jake Matthews

Last season, Atlanta's Jake Matthews led all NFL left tackles with 1,118 snaps.

Matthews was highly touted by analytics site Pro Football Focus, which gave him an overall grade of 79.8 and pass blocking grade of 85.4. A first-round pick in 2014, Matthews hasn't shown many signs of wearing down, having started single every regular-season game dating back to Week 2 of his rookie campaign.

Jonathan Greenard signed with the Vikings as a free agent last spring and impressed during his first season in Purple, starting all 17 games and logging 12 sacks. The Georgia native will have to be on his Ps and Qs when facing Matthews, whose football pedigree runs deep (Vikings fans will be well-familiar with his cousin, former Packer Clay Matthews).

Week 3 vs. Bengals | Vikings CBs vs. Tee Higgins & Ja'Marr Chase

Anytime Joe Burrow gets involved, big things can happen in the passing game.

The Vikings will face Burrow and the Bengals for Minnesota's first noon (CT) kickoff of the 2025 slate, and their cornerbacks will face a tall test in receiver duo Ja'Marr Chase and Tee Higgins.

Chase, former LSU teammate of Burrow and Justin Jefferson, last season racked up career-high numbers in catches (127), yards (1,708) and touchdowns (17). Chase ranked No. 1 in the league in receiving (Jefferson was at No. 2.)

Higgins played just 12 games but made his presence felt, recording 73 receptions for 911 yards and 10 touchdowns.

Minnesota re-signed starter Byron Murphy, Jr., who snagged six interceptions last season, and signed Isaiah Rodgers and Jeff Okudah in free agency. The Vikings also are excited to welcome back third-year corner Mekhi Blackmon, who missed the 2024 season with a knee injury, and seeing what Dwight McGlothern does in Year 2.

Week 4 at Steelers (in Dublin) | RB Aaron Jones, Sr., vs. LB T.J. Watt & Co.

Visit Vikings.com/international for more information.

The Vikings re-signed Aaron Jones, Sr., to return for a second season with Minnesota after spending the first seven of his career with Green Bay. Jones demonstrated durability through all 17 regular-season games and the Wild Card matchup, and he recently told media members he's feeling great this offseason.

Minnesota is facing some physical opponents this season, among them a Steelers defense that features outside linebacker T.J. Watt. The younger brother of five-time All-Pro J.J. Watt, T.J. has been a consistent contributor for Pittsburgh and has twice led the NFL in tackles for loss.

Jones will need to be aware of Watt and the Steelers linebackers, both in the run game and if asked to pick up a blitz in the passing game.

Week 5 at Browns (in London) | T Brian O'Neill vs. DE Myles Garrett

Visit Vikings.com/international for more information.

Brian O'Neill and Christian Darrisaw know exactly what they're getting in Browns defensive end Myles Garrett, as the two saw plenty of each other last August when the teams had two joint practice sessions before their preseason game in Cleveland.

Garrett recorded 14 sacks for the second straight season and also logged a career-high 22 tackles for loss en route to his fifth consecutive Pro Bowl nod.

The Vikings lost Darrisaw to a knee injury for the second half of last season, but he's expected to be ready to go for the upcoming season, and he'll likely embrace the challenge of Cleveland's pass rushers along with O'Neill.

The units gave each other a handful during joint practices. Now, everything counts.

Week 7 vs. Eagles | LB Blake Cashman vs. RB Saquon Barkley

The 2025 season marks Saquon Barkley's second in Philadelphia after spending his first six NFL seasons with the Giants. The dynamic running back logged career numbers last season, racking up 2,005 rushing yards and 13 touchdowns on 345 attempts.

Barkley is certainly a force to be reckoned with, and one of the defenders Minnesota will look to is linebacker Blake Cashman, also entering his second season with a new team. A fifth-round draft pick in 2019, the Eden Prairie native played three years for the Jets and then two for the Texans before joining his home-state team last spring in free agency.

Cashman played against the Giants in 2022 but mostly on special teams (25 snaps compared to five on defense).

Week 8 at Chargers | S Harrison Smith vs. TE Tyler Conklin

When you're in your 14th NFL season, it's not unlikely that you'll run into familiar faces throughout the season.

Among Harrison Smith's former Vikings teammates now suiting up for an opponent is tight end Tyler Conklin, who played for Minnesota from 2018-21. Conklin spent the past three seasons with the Jets but this spring joined the Chargers as a free agent.

Conklin has proven to be reliable both as a blocker and pass catcher, so it will be fun to see if he and Smith have any good matchups in the backfield. Last season with New York, Conklin had 51 catches for 449 yards and four touchdowns.

Smith and Conklin may share an affinity for Nicolas Cage movies, but they won't be sharing a sideline this time around.

Week 10 vs. Ravens | QB J.J. McCarthy "vs." QB Lamar Jackson

OK, I'm cheating a little bit with this one because of course the Vikings and Ravens quarterbacks won't technically be going "against" each other; but it should be a fun game between Baltimore's three-time All-Pro Lamar Jackson and McCarthy, who is expected to be Minnesota's starter after losing his rookie campaign to a knee injury.

Jackson last year earned his fourth career Pro Bowl nod and second consecutive after starting all 17 regular-season games and racking up 4,172 passing yards and 41 touchdowns, which tied for the NFL's second most.

Jackson's completion percentage of 66.7 was nearly a career high, just behind the 67.2 percent he recorded in 2023. He threw just four interceptions, the lowest of any QB who played at least 15 games.

Week 13 at Seahawks | OLB Andrew Van Ginkel vs. QB Sam Darnold

Long time, no see.

The Vikings are returning to Seattle again this season, not quite a full year after visiting the Seahawks last December. This time, though, Sam Darnold will be on the home sideline.

Darnold helped lead Minnesota to one of its 14 regular-season wins last year on a rainy Seattle afternoon. He joined the Seahawks this spring as a free agent, and he'll turn around right away and face his former team.

Vikings pass rusher Andrew Van Ginkel is entering his second season in Purple and will have some fun seeing Darnold on game-day rather than just the practice field. After all those practices of being unable to touch the red jersey-clad Darnold, it's fair to assume Van Ginkel will be plenty amped to try to sack the QB.

Week 14 vs. Commanders | DL Jonathan Allen vs. Commanders interior OL

Week 14 might feel a bit surreal for Vikings defensive lineman Jonathan Allen, who joined Minnesota as a free agent after eight seasons in D.C.

Allen helped the Commanders last year reach the postseason for the first time since 2020 and the NFC Championship Game for the first time since … wait for it … 1991. Allen and the rest of Minnesota's interior defensive line will face a Commanders interior o-line that features three-time Super Bowl champ Nick Allegretti at guard and 6-foot-7 Sam Cosmi, who allowed just one sack last season according to analytics site Pro Football Focus.

Center Tyler Biadasz started all 15 games he played in 2024, his first season with the Commanders after four years in Dallas.

Week 15 at Cowboys | WR Justin Jefferson vs. CB Trevon Diggs

Back to Dallas for Sunday Night Football.

It's been (more than) a few years, but the Vikings last trip to AT&T Stadium featured an electric ending with Minnesota defeating Dallas 28-24 on the prime-time stage.

Justin Jefferson was still at LSU during that November 2019 contest; so this year, he'll have a chance to strut his stuff against the Cowboys defense. I'm especially looking forward to him facing fellow 2020 NFL Draft classmate Trevon Diggs, the younger brother of former Vikings receiver Stefon Diggs.

Last season, Trevon started all 11 games he played for the Cowboys and snagged two interceptions. He also recorded 42 tackles (35 solo). The 26-year-old's breakout season occurred in 2021 when he nabbed an impressive 11 picks, returning two of them for touchdowns. Though his past two seasons have been hampered by injury, the 6-foot-2 cornerback will keep receivers honest.

And, let's be honest — the Cowboys will likely double or triple cover Jefferson.

Week 16 at Giants | C Ryan Kelly vs. DT Dexter Lawrence II

New Vikings center Ryan Kelly will have an opportunity to go against Dexter Lawrence II, who's been problematic for Minnesota in the past.

Originally the 17th overall draft pick in 2019, Lawrence has given opposing interior linemen reason to worry over 92 games played (85 starts). He played 12 games for the Giants last season and recorded a career-high 9.0 sacks and eight tackles for loss.

The Vikings defeated the Giants in Week 1 last year and now will return to New York much later in the season. In order to keep McCarthy clean and upright, they'll be looking to Kelly to lock things down.
