EAGAN, Minn. — The Vikings on Wednesday announced safety Joshua Metellus and outside linebacker Jonathan Greenard have been placed on Injured Reserve.
Vikings Head Coach Kevin O'Connell on Monday had said Greenard's second season with the Vikings would be coming to a close due to a shoulder injury he suffered in Week 10 against Baltimore.
O'Connell announced the move regarding Metellus on Wednesday.
The sixth-year safety has been playing through a shoulder injury that has had him on the injury report since Week 13.
Metellus totaled 86 tackles, 0.5 sacks, one tackle for loss, two quarterback hits, a team-high two interceptions and six passes defensed.
"We've just been evaluating that shoulder, kind of a week-in and week-out basis, and got home late Sunday, went through some of the medical evaluations Monday and into yesterday, and it's been determined he's going to get his shoulder fixed," O'Connell explained. "[Vice President of Player Health and Performance] Tyler [Williams] and his group, our doctors and Josh feel like this is the right time to not risk possibly injuring it any more.
"Along the same lines as J.G. (Greenard), one of our captains and a guy that I could not respect more for the toughness he's shown playing with that injury as we've approached the tail end of the season," O'Connell continued of Metellus. "And just pushed through a lot this year, continuing to lead at such a high standard."
O'Connell noted Metellus and Greenard will remain around the team as they start rehab and be "heavily involved" and help push their teammates to "try to finish the way we want to, stacking some good December performances on what we were able to do in December a year ago."
Greenard totaled 38 tackles with 3.0 sacks, 10 tackles for loss, 12 quarterback hits, three passes defensed and a forced fumble. He missed Minnesota's Week 11 and 12 games before returning to action in a limited capacity in Week 13 at Seattle. In Week 15 at Dallas, Greenard played perhaps his finest game of the season, creating havoc that helped slow down an explosive Cowboys offense.
O'Connell also announced rookie tight end Gavin Bartholomew, who has been on the Reserve/Physically Unable to Perform all season, is returning to practice this week.
Minnesota (6-8) is visiting the New York Giants (2-12) at noon (CT) Sunday in Week 16.
