Vikings, Remmers Reunite Along Offensive Line

EDEN PRAIIRE, Minn. —The Vikings continued to beef up their offensive line this offseason as the team announced Friday that they have signed tackle Mike Remmers.

It's a reunion of sorts for Remmers and the Vikings. The 27-year-old spent part of the 2013 season and 2014 training camp with the Vikings and said he's excited to be back in the Twin Cities.

"The coaches were great, and I love the organization here, the fan base here," Remmers recalled. "Being familiar with it was definitely a big reason (for coming back)."

The 27-year-old started every game for the past two seasons for the Carolina Panthers, and has made 37 regular-season starts in his career. An undrafted free agent out of Oregon State, Remmers is entering his sixth professional season.

"I think I bring a lot of energy," Remmers said. "Very physical player. I just try to make the biggest holes I possibly can in the run game and protect as long as I possibly can."

Remmers primarily played right tackle in Carolina but moved to the left side for the majority of 2016 due to injuries.

"Last year, I kind of got thrown into the fire a little bit at left tackle," Remmers said. "I feel like I learned a lot about my technique and everything like that playing left tackle.

"It just helped me grow … but I'm very excited to be back playing at right tackle," he added.

Remmers spent time with multiple NFL teams before latching on with Carolina in 2014. He also had stints with the Broncos, Buccaneers, Chargers and Rams.

He was released multiple times but said each stop along the way made him a better player. Remmers called his journey a "crazy ride" but added that the way he was able to improve was through reps and practice.

"I kind of bounced around from team to team … experience is just the biggest thing," Remmers said. "Just going to different teams and learning from different coaches and different players, the main thing is just experience.

"I think it's helped me tremendously and helped me develop into the player I am today," he added.

Remmers squared off against the Vikings in Week 13 of the 2014 season, a 31-13 Minnesota win on a day where the Vikings returned a pair of blocked punts for touchdowns on a bitterly cold day.

Remmers later helped the Panthers get to Super Bowl 50 and blocked for Panthers quarterback Cam Newton during his NFL MVP campaign in 2015. He has made 42 consecutive starts, including five career postseason starts.

"It was a fun experience," Remmers said of Carolina's 2015 season. "It was fun going to the Super Bowl, but I want to do that here. I want to win that Super Bowl. That's my goal."

Remmers was the second offensive lineman the Vikings signed on Friday. Minnesota also signed tackle Riley Reiff, formerly of the Detroit Lions.

A walk-on at Oregon State, Remmers made 44 career starts for the Beavers, with 12 coming at left tackle and 32 at right tackle.
