EAGAN, Minn. — "That's like a warrior uniform right there."

Blake Cashman's response to the Vikings Rivalries Uniform perfectly captures the new look's inspiration.

Cashman and several of his teammates received a sneak peek of the new threads, and genuine reactions communicated their excitement:

"Man, we can only wear it once this season?" Aaron Jones, Sr., confirmed. "These are the cleanest unis in the league."

Jordan Addison came through the door and immediately let out an "Oooooo!" The receiver walked up to a uniform-clad mannequin and closely examined the color and details, whistling in awe.

"I gotta get my cleats ready," he smiled.

"That's gonna be sick," Justin Jefferson said. "That's gonna be tough, for sure."

Added T.J. Hockenson: "Oh, sheeesh. Those are sweet. Those are sick."

Safe to say the players approve of a design that has been inspired by historical Viking warriors who donned their most majestic regalia for the biggest battles.

Designing the Vikings Rivalries Uniform

The NFL x Nike Rivalries program kicked off in 2025, during which the AFC East and the NFC West teams unveiled their Rivalries looks.

The Vikings are part of Year 2 of the launch, which this season features the NFC North and AFC South. The core goals of the program are to drive youth engagement, celebrate local traditions and unite communities via unique uniform designs. Each Club, in partnership with Nike and the League, created designs rooted in their team's legacy, reflecting the most authentic expressions of community pride.

The process to officially bring the Vikings Rivalries Uniforms to life spanned two years. The concept, however, was inspired much longer ago.

When the Vikings worked with Nike to develop Minnesota's Winter Warrior uniforms, an all-white design, they also ideated a darker Viking warrior that incorporated historical armor and textures.

They ultimately decided on pursuing the white, icy version for the Vikings second alternate uniform, which was unveiled in 2024, joining The Classic uniform that launched in 2023.

But when Nike presented teams with the option for a fifth uniform, one not obliged to the previous guidelines governing alternates, Vikings Senior Creative Director Alicia Dreyer and the team, which included Vikings Equipment Director Mike Parson, presented their concept for the darker warrior.

"While we still needed to remain within our established brand colors, we had the freedom to explore different shades, tones and combinations. We could also develop entirely new number styles and wordmarks," Dreyer explained. "The added flexibility allowed us to more fully embrace the Viking identity and incorporate elements we had not previously been able to explore."

Some fans might ask, Why not black?

Though an all-black uniform can certainly present a stark, intimidating on-field look, it's also a concept several teams across the league have already utilized.

Vikings Art Director Jackie Ramacher noted the desire to differentiate Minnesota's "dark mode" expression from opponents — to make it uniquely Vikings.

"We thought, how can we find the deepest purple that's available that still kind of gives this dark feel but is really only something that we can own?" Ramacher explained. "We were really excited when Nike came to us with this color, Purple Dynasty, which is kind of as dark as we could go while still remaining purple."

Parson, who has been with the Vikings since April 2023 and also helped ideate Winter Warrior, has dedicated himself to a deep understanding of the franchise's history. He shared sentiments of remaining true to the Vikings DNA when designing the Rivalries Uniform.

"Since 1961, we've had purple hats, and that is something we wanted to stick with," he said. "We don't look like anybody else. We've done it before anybody else did it — and we just kind of reached back into some of our own transitions and brought back a darker purple."

Dreyer and her team create a sort of Venn diagram when working with the Vikings brand and developing new concepts within it: Does the idea align with (1) ancient Vikings, (2) the Northern region that includes Minnesota and its surrounding areas and (3) the football team and its game-day traditions?

"We're really inspired by Viking elements that are also found in Minnesota," Dreyer explained. "The Vikings used iron tools, and we have the Iron Range. We have shorelines on the North Shore similar to Scandinavia.

"And there's a similar spirit," she added. "The North isn't just a direction; it's a mindset. It's about resilience and unity — and that's something we see a lot in our team but also with the ancient Vikings."

During the process of developing the Rivalries jersey, one of the questions asked by the design team was, what would a modern-day Viking look like? What if we view our team as the Vikings of today?

"When we look at creating uniforms or design, we're imagining our players as the modern-day Vikings preparing for battle," Dreyer said. "And for the Rivalries concept … Jackie even said, 'It's like Ragnarok is happening on the North Shore.' Her creative idea really drove some of the art."

Vikings game days, of course, are very different battles than the literal combat the original Vikings engaged in. And yet, there are similar philosophies to be found when learning about their history and culture.

"We have to be innovative. We have to be adaptable, and we have to try things that people haven't tried before. That's what the Vikings had to do to cross the Atlantic," Ramacher said. "So we face different challenges, but we have that same spirit of adventure and of resiliency that we bring to the field each game day."

Vikings Rivalries Uniform Details

For everyday conflict, ancient Viking warriors wore practical armor. But for especially significant battles, they donned their most valuable, meaningful and symbolic pieces.

The Rivalries Uniform design was inspired by the textures of Viking armor; natural materials such as iron, wood and stone that connect both Minnesota and the ancient Viking world; and elements from Minnesota Vikings game-day rituals, including runestones, the Gjallarhorn and the Skol Drum.

Below are intentional elements of the Vikings Rivalries Uniform design as described by Dreyer, Ramacher and Parson.

Color Story

Deep Purple: The Purple Dynasty color draws inspiration from the past to inform the future. The franchise's original helmets and uniforms were a deeper, darker purple than the organization's current home jerseys.

Ivory: Nike was inspired to use ivory by Vikings past and present, and their designers pulled from the color of the Vikings Gjallarhorn.

"We had never really explored that before and love how it elevates the look — more earthy and natural, but rich." — Dreyer

"The horn doesn't change because it's nighttime, doesn't change because it snows. It stays the same. We were able to incorporate some shadows and the shading to give that horn the exact look we wanted, with the ivories and creams kind of simulating the shadows of a fire hitting it." — Parson

Metallic Gold: "While we say we are a purple-and-gold team, we have been limited to using yellow in our uniforms. Turning that to a metallic gold really elevates the design and speaks to the history of Vikings trading materials and their artistry with precious metals. Winter Warrior leaned into Metallic Gray to represent silver and iron; but gold is the next level, and this uniform was created for our biggest battles of the year against our division rivals." — Dreyer

Rune Symbols

"The uniform features SKOL transcribed in Rune characters. The Rune system, called Younger Futhark, features a 16-character runic alphabet used in Scandinavia during The Viking Age.

"The same Rune characters appear on the runestones that line the field when our players run out of the tunnel on game day, now featured on the inside collar of the jersey, as well as the 3D bumper on the front of the helmet."  — Ramacher

Nordic Knot

The Nordic knot pattern in the Rivalries Uniform mimics the knots found on the Gjallarhorn at U.S. Bank Stadium.

'Metal' Designs

On the outsides of the pants, a "stripe" bearing the Nordic knot design comes to a point to symbolize a battle sword.

Additionally, a similar stripe down the center of the helmet mimics the nose piece on an ancient Viking's helmet.

Numbers

The numbers are designed to be two-toned, making them appear chiseled from stone or in ivory in a similar manner to Runes.

New Vikings Wordmark

A revised VIKINGS wordmark was heavily inspired by the chiseled structure of Rune carvings.

"I like the wordmark Nike created for VIKINGS. It's very aggressive, in my opinion." — Parson

As the Vikings reveal their Rivalries Uniform to fans, they are proud of the emotions, energy and excitement the new design invokes.

"We talked about the different details that we included, but I ultimately think it's just a beautiful jersey," Dreyer said. "It's visually stunning, and I was so excited to see how our players reacted to it. They love it. And I think that gives them a confidence on the field."

Parson acknowledged it can be "nerve-racking" when previewing the uniform to players because of the passion and work that went into the process.

"You're thinking about the performance aspect of it, and you're also thinking about the players loving it when they put it in," he said. "And when they saw it, I'll quote what Justin told me, 'You snapped on this.' That made me very happy.

"[Head Coach Kevin] O'Connell, Rob [Brzezinski], they all loved it, and then the players raved about it," Parson added, "So now it's about letting the fans see it — and I'm sure they're going to be very happy with it."

As the Vikings look forward to debuting their Rivalries Uniform against the Lions on Dec. 20, they hope fans will share an appreciation for the depth of research, history and symbolism behind each design choice.

"Big picture, it's just a cool uniform — but then there's so much meaning behind everything," Dreyer said. "I love … the fact that it's the same braid that's on our Gjallarhorn, and it's the color of the Gjallarhorn. These pieces that really have resonated with our fans are embedded in this uniform.

"I don't know how many people noticed that [SKOL is etched in the runestones outside the players' tunnel], but it's been there since we opened U.S. Bank Stadium — and now it's getting a front-row seat on the front of our helmets," she added. "I think it's really cool that we're pulling from things already in our brand and we don't have to make up new [elements]. We are the Vikings."
