EAGAN, Minn. — There's a hopeful homecoming Sunday on the road at New Orleans.
Justin Jefferson has been rehabbing an ankle injury suffered in Week 3. The superstar receiver from St. Rose, Louisiana, has waited for six years for the Vikings to visit the Saints.
He played there during his rookie season and caught six passes for 85 yards on Christmas Day, but Minnesota's short-handed defense struggled to contain Alvin Kamara in an almost empty Superdome.
He said Wednesday that he is "fiending" to be available to play in front of a horde of family and friends in the same venue where he helped the 2019 LSU Tigers complete a perfect season and claim the College Football Playoff National Championship with nine catches for 106 yards.
With the status of Jefferson and receiver Jordan Addison (hamstring) in question, the Vikings signed veteran receiver Odell Beckham, Jr., to its practice squad. Head Coach Kevin O'Connell said Friday that the team was still working through who it might elevate for Sunday's game.
Beckham is a New Orleans native and fellow LSU icon. He's played once at the Superdome in his pro career, but it was the kind of performance that lasts for a lifetime, albeit in a loss. He had nine receptions for 130 yards and three scores as the Saints defeated the Giants 52-49. That one featured 13 touchdown passes between Drew Brees (seven) and Eli Manning (six). Brees also threw a pick six in the instant classic.
O'Connell ruled out Christian Darrisaw (concussion) and Chuck Demmings (hamstring). Brian O'Neill was listed as questionable.
Let's preview Minnesota's next opportunity to go 1-0 at noon (CT) Sunday before its bye.

3 Prominent Topics
1. Left side of the line
Darrisaw and Donovan Jackson are down — the latter tore his meniscus in Week 4, ending his second regular season in the NFL (there's some hope he could return by the playoffs) — so Ryan Van Demark and Joe Huber are up. The new left tackle-left guard pairing substituted for the 2021 and 2025 first-round picks vs. Miami, and there is confidence in their abilities.
Wes Phillips explained why Van Demark was an important free-agent signing this past offseason, after a year of turmoil in the trenches: "He's big, he's long. And the pass pro really, really stuck out there as far as how he'd be able to help us if he needed to step in."
Additionally, the Vikings offensive coordinator revisited the club signing Huber in 2025 as an undrafted free agent out of Wisconsin and feeling strongly about a legacy of Badgers o-linemen who are tough, physical and smart players with ample run-blocking experiences.
Huber made the initial 53-man roster and started the London game last season.
"I think across the league, if everyone knew what he would end up being and how well he would end up playing and the flexibility that he's been able to show — being able to play some center as well — he probably would have been taken much higher," Phillips shared.
2. Pressure effects
Minnesota's vaunted defense has racked 74 QB pressures or 18.5 per game (h/t Next Gen Stats). It's the third most in the NFL behind Atlanta (82) and Detroit (75) — that's not by coincidence. Those teams have played a common opponent: New Orleans and Saints QB Tyler Shough, who has suffered 73 pressures; the only passer that's been under more duress is Carolina's Bryce Young (75). Shough has been sacked 12 times, tied for third most, and he has 23 more drop backs than anyone, which reflects a run game averaging 3.6 yards a pop.
Shough is only a sophomore by NFL standards, but he's 27 years old. Although he has faced immense pressure this season, he's performed well minus three interceptions and five fumbles. He is 31-for-48 with 275 yards, five touchdowns and a pick when he is blitzed.
Brian Flores' forces have created 14 turnovers in their past seven games dating to Week 16 last year.
3. Kyler Murray's next steps
Murray enjoyed the power of completions in Week 4, finding a rhythm in the offense, particularly in the fourth quarter when the Vikings possessed the football for 14 minutes. Like he became known for in Arizona, playing with TE Trey McBride, he took a particular liking to T.J. Hockenson, who posted his most catches (13) and yards (119) in a game since … Week 10 in 2023 against the Saints when he hauled in 11 of 15 targets for 134 yards and one touchdown. Murray called Hock' a "friendly" option and expects their rapport to grow.
Murray is 2-1 versus the Saints and 1-1 at the Superdome. He played there in Week 8 as a rookie and went 19-for-33 with 220 passing yards. He was more prolific in Arizona's opener last season, going 21-for-29 with 163 yards and two touchdowns in addition to rushing for 38 yards in a 20-13 victory. (Spencer Rattler was the Saints starting quarterback that game.)

2 Talented Saints
WR Chris Olave | No. 12
If you play fantasy football, you already know Olave is setting a league-winning pace. He ranked first in the NFL entering Week 5 in targets with 12 per game (48) — two more than CeeDee Lamb, Amon-Ra St. Brown and Trey McBride — and he's nabbed a career-high 72.9% of his looks for 491 yards and a touchdown. As we said, it's the kind of volume that wins fantasy 'ships.
Olave's scorching start isn't out of nowhere, but it's on another level for him. Drafted 11th overall out of Ohio State, he amassed 72, 87 and 100 catches in 2022, 2023 and 2025 (we're omitting his 2024 log since he was limited to eight games) over 15, 16 and 16 contests, and recorded 1,042, 1,123 and 1,163 yards, respectively. Now get this: If Olave can replicate his 8.8 catches and 122.8 yards per game 13 more times, he'll finish with 150 snatches for 2,088 yards. It's probably not a sustainable pace, but it's worth noting Shough has attempted an NFL-high 180 passes, and his passer rating when targeting Olave is 112.4.
On tape, Olave has great pull-away speed and shows a good feeling for when to settle his routes against zone, as well as a fearlessness to be strong at the catchpoint on tight-window throws. He makes tracking — and tricky adjustments — look easy and accelerates out of his breaks as quickly as he does with the ball in space, which cements him as a threat to win over the top against coverage or take a hitch and turn it into a chunk. Olave's receiving EPA (expected points added) of +33.2 ranked only behind Lamb's +40.0 entering Week 5 per Next Gen Stats.
Olave appeared on New Orleans' injury report this week (first for rest, before an added reason of "foot" popped up Thursday), but he fully participated Friday and is expected to be available.
EDGE Chase Young | No. 99
The No. 2 overall pick in 2020 (a former Buckeye like Olave) has aligned as the Saints right edge rusher on 95% of his snaps this season, according to NGS. His productivity speaks for itself; his 17 pressures rank ninth among edge players and his 18.7% pressure rate is 12th (min. 50 pass rushes). The rest of New Orleans' edge room has combined for 13 pressures, by the way. Suffice to say, bottling up Young will be a big assignment for the left-side o-line.
Young is applying pressure at the same frequency as 2025, when he had 10 sacks in 12 games after missing the first five with a calf injury. He has totally rebooted his career since joining the Saints in 2024 after spending 3.5 seasons with Washington, which included a solid Defensive Rookie of the Year campaign but a severe ACL injury the next year, and half of 2023 on the 49ers. He has 41 QB hits in his past 33 games; he tallied 47 over his first 59.
The first thing you'll notice about Young are the dreadlocks spilling out the back of his lid that inspired his "Predator" nickname after the alien creature from the film franchise (a nod to him hunting quarterbacks, as well). The second is his strength. He walked back Lions LT Penei Sewell several times in the Week 1 game that Detroit squeaked out in overtime; once, he bull-rushed Sewell into RB Sione Vaki and then mauled Jared Goff's blindside for a sack-fumble. And that's the third part of Young's game that stands out: his ability to finish. Young is 6-foot-5, 265 pounds and very athletic. He affected Lamar Jackson seven times in New Orleans' Week 2 win vs. the Ravens with 1.5 sacks and a pressure that led to a Saints pick.
1 More Thing to Know
Minnesota's defense, obviously, deserves its flowers. But how about those Vikings special teams? Sheesh! The party has been rocking since Week 2 when cornerback Isaiah Rodgers rejected a potential game-tying field goal and collected NFC Special Teams Player of the Week honors. It continued in Week 3 as Myles Price snapped a decade-long drought for a Vikings punt return touchdown when he housed one from 86 yards out at Tampa Bay on his way to claiming NFC Special Teams Player of the Week — and month for September — accolades, and it reached legendary status when silent-killer kicker Will Reichard accounted for each point in Minnesota's 15-10 win last Sunday and bagged the club's three-peat with another Special Teams POTW award. Can you say third-phase aces? It marked the fifth instance and first since the 2011 49ers of a team having a player win such recognition in three or more consecutive games, according to NFL Communications. The 2003 Chiefs did it first (Dante Hall, a.k.a. "The Human Joystick", incredibly won it four times in a row), followed by the 2004 Saints — P Mitch Berger, RB Aaron Stecker, WR Michael Lewis and DE Tony Bryant took home special teams distinctions in Weeks 14, 15, 16 and 17 — and the 2007 Chargers.
Reichard has hit his past 31 FG attempts and is a perfect 75-for-75 in his career on extra points — and he's neck-and-neck with Bills QB Josh Allen, Lions RB Jahmyr Gibbs, Ravens RB Derrick Henry and Colts K Spencer Shrader for the NFL scoring lead (42 points).
"He's got such a competitor inside [of him]," O'Connell said Wednesday. "He doesn't always present in a way where you're necessarily intimidated by him when you talk to him or walk next to him. But I'll tell you what, the competitor that I know is inside of him and just the 'want' to meet the moment and feel so confident in the moment is a scary thing for people to know that at any point in time he can jog out there and put points on the board."
