EAGAN, Minn. — Here's a quick rundown of what the Vikings are bringing to the Motor City this weekend: 11 consecutive wins, five games in a row with an NFC Player of the Week award winner, and the NFL's No. 1 scoring defense, which is predicated on blitzing quarterbacks till they collapse.
Let's get right to it and preview the Week 8 divisional matchup at Detroit, which is 4-2 and will dare to make Minnesota's palms sweaty and knees weak and arms heavy with the No. 2 scoring offense.
Uniform
Detroit is unveiling its "Defend the Den" Nike Rivalries uniforms, which feature a gray/silver color scheme with black numbers and blue trim, so Minnesota will contrast that look with purple helmets, jerseys and pants. The Vikings have worn purple jerseys on just one prior occasion at Detroit, but it wasn't against the Lions. Minnesota played a "home game" at Ford Field on Monday Night Football against the Giants in Week 14 in 2010 after the Metrodome roof collapsed hours before the scheduled kickoff on Sunday.

3 Prominent Topics
1. Respect for Jared Goff
Brian Flores was serving as the Patriots linebackers coach when a then-rookie Goff rolled into New England and completed 43.8% of his passes in a decisive loss to the eventual Super Bowl champs. Fast-forward a few years and Goff helmed the Los Angeles Rams in Super Bowl LIII, which featured Flores as the Patriots defensive play caller in his final game before he became Miami's head coach.
Goff clipped 50% of his passes and threw a fatal interception vs. an all-out blitz in the final minutes.
The quarterback and coach met again in 2020 and Goff was flustered for the third time, completing 35 of 61 pass attempts (57.4%) in a 28-17 Dolphins win that involved, wait for it, a sack-fumble that Andrew Van Ginkel returned for a 78-yard touchdown, and a sack-fumble that Kyle Van Noy took 28 yards to the Rams 1 (former Vikings backup RB Myles Gaskin punched in a score on the next snap).
Note: Van Noy paces the Vikings in tackles for loss (7) this season, and Gink' has four sacks.
In 2021, Goff was shipped to Detroit in the trade that sent Matthew Stafford to the Rams, and two years later Flores joined Minnesota and started facing Goff twice a year. The QB won the first four matchups, but Flores' defense sacked him 10 times combined last season and took both contests.
The rivalry between competitors is real — and so is Flo's respect for the once-written off Goff, who boasts a perfect 14:0 touchdown-to-interception ratio and ranks first in passer rating (112.5) and is even more dialed against the blitz, with the No. 3 passer rating (123.3), according to Next Gen Stats.
"He's certainly grown exponentially since (back) then," Flores said, praising Goff for his mastery of the offense. "His ability to just extract information from the defense with shifts, motions, cadence, and his ability to gather that information and then make the correct reads [and] throws is high level.
"He's seen all the blitzes, you know, he's seen them all," Flores added. "I think he's one of the best in the league. And they've got a great skill group. And he knows how to distribute the ball to all of them. And this is a major challenge — and certainly kept me up the last couple nights."
2. Taking flight at Ford Field
For the umpteenth time in the past year-and-a-half, Justin Jefferson separated himself from a stigma that right or wrong is sometimes attached to superstar players: they can be prima donnas.
Jefferson is the opposite. He's a world-class receiver and every bit as wonderful as a teammate and leader. He reinforced that this week by pretty much shrugging off any semblance of frustration over not having the kind of numbers he got used to from 2020-24, as the Vikings have emphasized running the football while its passing attack adjusts with Kyler Murray at quarterback. "Jets" averaged 96.5 receiving yards per game over his first five seasons, and totaled 449 more than anyone else, but his tally has dipped to 61.4 a game since the start of 2025, and his 1,350 yards during that span ranks 16th overall.
The only stat Jefferson is concerned with is the win/loss column, so he has no complaints right now.
"Obviously, you want to have high production. Obviously, you want to be in the top [spot] in all categories. But you have to look at the bigger picture and understand that we're 6-0, we're winning games, and what we're doing right now is working," Jefferson told reporters. "There's things to do better and things to kind of fix on the offensive side of things — but all in all, it's coming together."
The location of Sunday's game may help Jefferson resume his standard; in six career clashes at Ford Field, he has converted 52 of 73 targets into catches for 831 yards and three scores. It's by far the most receiving yards recorded by a visiting player at Ford Field (ahead of Donald Driver at 699).
Detroit has its own receiving dynamo in Amon-Ra St. Brown (Jameson Williams can take the lid off defenses, too), who is playing his 90th career game and already holds the NFL record for receptions within a player's first 90 appearances, with 593 entering Week 8 (Michael Thomas is No. 2 at 565). Jefferson is playing his 100th game and is third on the receiving chart (8,782), behind Julio Jones (9,618) and Lance Alworth (9,013) for the most yards posted through a player's century mark game.
3. Winning in the margins
Kevin O'Connell is expertly navigating games while the offense finds its rhythm.
The defense and special teams are deservedly getting flowers, but the group that runs the plays called by O'Connell is contributing in unique ways, as well. For one, they are balanced. Minnesota has a 50-50 run/pass split under O'Connell for the first time in his tenure — the closest prior rate was 56-44 pass to run in 2024. That has greatly impacted time of possession, where the Vikings are second, averaging about 33 minutes. They're also taking care of the rock. The unit's four turnovers are tied with the 2009 and '11 squads for the club's fewest through the first six games of a season.
O'Connell isn't vexed about ringing the bell from a statistical standpoint so much as he wants Minnesota's offense to evolve and become reliable in seizing momentum, capturing leads and delivering them to Flo's group so that they are able to play with an advantage earlier in matchups.
"If we go out there and have 500 yards of offense, but we turn the ball over three times, that may be good for the rankings and all those things, but that's not good for our football team," O'Connell shared. "So [it's about] how do we continue to progress and know that we're going to need to be the reason why we win some football games this year, offensively, making plays in critical moments."
2 Talented Lions
1. Brian Branch
The Lions ball-hawking safety made his season debut in Week 7 and promptly nabbed his first interception of the year, picking off Packers QB Jordan Love near the start of the fourth quarter. Branch played 67% of the defensive snaps and finished with the takeaway and four tackles in the Lions 20-17 win, which was his first game action since tearing his Achilles in Week 14 last season.
Branch, the 45th overall pick in 2023 (part of a star-studded Detroit draft class that netted the next Lion in this section, as well as linebacker Jack Campbell and tight end Sam LaPorta), defended the fifth-most passes in the NFL (38) from his debut season through 2025, despite missing eight games. In that span, Branch was one of three players, alongside Xavier McKinney and Kyle Hamilton, with at least 250 tackles, 30 pass deflections and five interceptions. Branch has a nose for the ball and owns a wealth of experience playing different roles — dropping into the box, hovering in the slot and roaming the deep middle — although he primarily factored at free safety in his return to the lineup.
Branch's versatility jumps out but so does his entire skill set. A scan of his film against the Packers showed a player who is instinctive in the box and can scrape over blocks and fill holes like a 'backer, and who fearlessly defends the run and clamps down on passes with a quick trigger. Dan Campbell said, "He's just a heck of a football player," and "he's not even fully back yet, as far as just the rust."

2. Jahmyr Gibbs
Mama, there goes that man! Detroit's running back is Fast with a capital "F." In his fourth season —his first not splitting touches with David Montgomery, who is on the Texans now — Gibbs is averaging career highs in rushes (22.3) and yards (103.3) per game. He's averaging highs in catches (5.3) and yards (45) per game, as well. Basically, he's become a dual-threat workhorse for the Lions.
Although Gibbs' longest play of 2026 so far is only 23 yards via a reception, he's been highly productive in the middle distances, carving out 10-plus yards on 21 carries (No. 2 to Buffalo's James Cook's 22) and 15+ on 10, which is T-2nd with Kansas City's Kenneth Walker III and trails only Cook's 11.
Gibbs is getting it done with his signature speed and uncanny elusiveness. Next Gen Stats has tracked Gibbs hitting 15-plus miles per hour on 26 rushes — Jacksonville's Bhayshul Tuten is the only player with more at 31 — and Pro Football Focus has him with 41 missed tackles forced on runs; Walker has 42 and Rams RB Kyren Williams (31) is the other player above 30 entering Week 8.
Since Detroit selected Gibbs 12th overall in 2023 he has 58 touchdowns — four more than Derrick Henry in second — and 5,919 scrimmage yards, which is No. 2 to Bijan Robinson for the NFL lead. In six career games against Minnesota, Gibbs has 552 yards (5.0 per touch) and nine touchdowns.
1 More Thing to Know
Murray and Goff have done this dance before, and the Vikings QB can give it a new tune.
The top draft choices in 2019 and 2016, respectively, have faced one another five times — three when they were in the NFC West together and twice after Goff was traded to Detroit, during the 2021 and 2024 seasons. Goff is 5-0 and has outscored Murray's teams by 69 points, granted two of the games were decided by one possession. For the most part, Murray struggled with a sub-60% clip along with 243.2 passing/rushing yards per game and nine turnovers versus eight total touchdowns.
Of course, while it's neat to see two No. 1 picks cross paths again, those games mean zilch. This detail seems a bit more pertinent: Goff has never faced a top-ranked scoring defense and is 2-7 with an 82.6 passer rating in the regular season and playoffs against units pegged second or third.
