EAGAN, Minn. — The Vikings on Thursday announced they have signed veteran quarterback Kyler Murray.

The No. 1 overall pick of 2019 by Arizona joins the Vikings after starting all 87 regular-season games he played for the Cardinals. Murray's 38-48-1 record as a starter includes 13 game-winning drives but was hampered by Arizona becoming the first team since the 1970 merger to lose three consecutive games on walk-off field goals (Weeks 3-5 of 2025).

Murray's time on the field was limited to just five games in 2025. He completed 110 of 161 passes for 962 yards with six touchdowns and three interceptions for a passer rating of 88.6. Through the first five weeks of the season, Murray led the Cardinals with 173 rushing yards.

Over the course of his time with Arizona, Murray completed 1,974 of 2,941 passes for 20,460 yards with 121 touchdowns and 60 interceptions. The completions rank second in franchise history, and the yards and passing touchdowns are third.

His career passer rating is 92.2, and his career completion percentage of 67.1 is a Cardinals franchise record among players who attempted at least 232 passes for Arizona and ranks fifth all-time in NFL history.

Murray traveled to Minnesota Wednesday and spent Thursday meeting with Vikings coaches and front-office staff before inking the deal.

The acquisition of Murray, who will turn 29 in August, occurs after J.J. McCarthy, 23, went 6-4 in his first 10 career starts but missed time in 2025 due to a high-ankle sprain, concussion and hand injury.

The Vikings said in January that they wanted to make the quarterbacks room as deep and competitive as possible this offseason. The messaging continued in February at the 2026 NFL Scouting Combine weeks after the team parted ways with former General Manager Kwesi Adofo-Mensah. Executive Vice President of Football Operations Rob Brzezinski was tabbed by ownership to lead the coaching staff and personnel department through the 2026 offseason.

Murray's addition brings experience and depth to a young quarterbacks room that has McCarthy and 2025 undrafted rookie Max Brosmer under contract for 2026.

Murray was able to hit the ground running by completing 64.4 percent of his passes for 3,722 yards and 20 touchdowns against 12 interceptions as a rookie, a campaign in which he was sacked an NFL-high 48 times but finished by claiming Offensive Rookie of the Year honors from The Associated Press.

He followed that debut season with two consecutive years that garnered Pro Bowl selections. He led the Cardinals to an 8-8 mark by throwing a career-high 26 touchdowns in 2020 before going 9-5 in 2021 when he posted his top single-season completion percentage (69.2) and passer rating (100.6). The completion percentage broke Murray's own Cardinals record of 67.2 in 2020.

Murray has also used his mobility along the way. He and Bills QB Josh Allen are the only two players all-time with 20,000 passing yards and more than 3,000 rushing yards in 85 or fewer games (Allen did so in 84, and Murray met the marks in his 85th career game).

Murray, Allen, Cam Newton and Jalen Hurts are the only QBs in NFL history to throw more than 100 touchdowns and score at least 30 rushing touchdowns through their first six seasons.

The only player ever drafted in the first round of the NFL and MLB (A's at No. 9 in 2018) drafts, Murray opted for football professionally and won the Heisman Trophy as a junior in Oklahoma in 2018.

He became a Sooner after beginning his college career at Texas A&M, where he was teammates with Vikings Assistant Quarterbacks Coach/Passing Game Specialist Jordan Traylor.

Murray grew up in Allen, Texas, northeast of Dallas and won three consecutive state football titles (5A in 2012-13 and 6A in 2014) by going 43-0 as a starter for the powerhouse.
