Kyler Murray's Scramble & T.J. Hockenson TD Push Vikings Past Colts

MINNEAPOLIS — Kyler Murray's speed and agility set up the play, and his toss to T.J. Hockenson — plus the tight end's own body awareness — put a bow on it.

Minnesota entered the fourth quarter trailing Indy 10-6. Murray took the snap, scanned his options, stepped up in the pocket and zipped between Aaron Jones, Sr., and Brian O'Neill. He only picked up speed as he ran, sprinting down the field diagonally before pivoting back inside and dashing toward the left sideline. Murray made it nearly to the end zone but ended up being pushed out of bounds 5 yards shy of the paint.

On the next play, Hockenson lined up on the far right in the Y position but then stepped back and ran behind the formation and all the way to the left. Murray immediately tossed the ball to Hockenson, who twisted to reach the ball just inside the pylon for the score — Minnesota's lone touchdown en route to a 16-10 win.

"Their edges were collapsing all day, [and] we run a lot of plays out of that. We were going into the boundary, so there's a little less room, but we made it work," Hockenson said.

"It was fun," he added with a grin. "I got to Griddy with Justin Jefferson. It's the best."

During Hockenson's previous outing at U.S. Bank Stadium, he unselfishly slid before the goal line to help the Vikings secure a win. This time, getting in helped seal the deal.

Aptly timed, too, for National Tight Ends Day.

It's just another day on the job for Hockenson, though, whose work ethic is consistently lauded and whose impact is well-rounded.

"Every single day I just try to come to work and build that repertoire with [Murray]," said Hockenson, who caught a 22-yard pass over the middle just a few minutes after the touchdown. "We work on stuff like that all the time. For him to be able to put the ball up and expect me to go get it and make a play, that's kind of what we [are developing].

"We had a little miss in the end zone earlier in the game, but for him to continue to — that's how you build that [rapport], just continuing to make plays for him," Hockenson said. "You move on and do it."

Murray finished the day 14-of-24 passing for 150 yards with no interceptions. His passer rating was 90.6.

He navigated the afternoon's ups and downs with composure and completed passes to six different teammates, as well as executing handoffs to Jordan Mason and Jones.

Jefferson led the Vikings with 44 yards on four catches, followed by Hockenson's 35 yards (also on four receptions).

"He's not the most vocal person," Jefferson acknowledged of Murray, "but whenever it's time for him to give those words of inspiration or motivation, he definitely gives it. And he understands the role he has. He understands what's right there in front of us, which is big — and something we can go far on. He's the leader of our team; he's [a] captain."

Jefferson and the rest of the Vikings locker room are never surprised when Murray shifts into gear and extends a play with his legs.

Jefferson said teammates "expect" it from Murray and receive a spark from those moments.

"We love to see that. We love to see him get out of that pocket and get the juices flowing, get the momentum going," he said. "It was definitely great to see him move a little bit."

Jordan Addison, who had two catches for 20 yards and a 3-yard rush, smiled about the scramble.

"I saw him moving, and once I saw him getting closer, I turned around and started blocking," Addison said. "But you know, that's K1. He's gonna make a play with his legs when we need it."

Murray noted the Colts were in man-to-man defense on that play, and the way things unfolded allowed the QB to take off.

"They have a great front, great defense. It's not necessarily like, 'Oh, it's man, I'm looking to run,' " Murray explained. "Usually, you get man with the guys that we have at wideout and tight end, there's probably a mismatch somewhere, but they did a good job."

The Colts defense limited Minnesota to 3-of-11 on third downs and limited Jones and Mason to 94 rushing yards. Murray was sacked three times, including twice by Adetomiwa Adebawore.

The Vikings chipped away offensively, though, and took advantage of big plays by the defense and multiple instances of positive field position. A second missed field goal by Colts K Spencer Shrader, who entered the game 18-foir-18 on field goals this season, also gave Minnesota an extra spark heading into the fourth quarter.

"I knew we were going to win," Addison said. "Once they missed that field goal, it's good field position, all we've got to do is take care of the ball, [not get] any penalties and punch it in."

Murray's scramble and Hockenson's touchdown highlighted another dynamic fourth quarter by the Vikings offense — but the unit of course wants to get things started earlier on in games.

"I feel like we moved the ball well today," Murray said. "But … we've got to put the ball in the end zone. At the end of the day, that's what it comes down to. But I did feel like we did some good things. Got to go back and watch it, but we'll continue to get better. I know we will."

Vikings Head Coach Kevin O'Connell is optimistic about the offense's direction, as is Murray.

"My confidence will never waver in the group that we have," he said. "I know it comes down to execution. Today, there's things we can do better [in the run] game, complete execution in the pass game. But as far as moving the ball, I feel like we did that. We've got to end the drive with touchdowns instead of kicking field goals.

The Vikings victories thus far may not be flashy, but as anyone around the league will tell you: A win is a win is a win.

Minnesota now has six of them, standing as the lone undefeated NFC team.

"At the end of the day, it's the NFL. It's not going to be perfect," Hockenson said. "But it's a special unit, a special group that we're around where we just find ways to win. And that's all you can ask for in the NFL."
