Jordan Addison Takes Flight to Finish 65-Yard Jet Sweep in End Zone

MINNEAPOLIS — Now Dasher, now Dancer, now Prancer, now … Addison?

Vikings receiver Jordan Addison picked up speed and took flight, delivering fans a Christmas Day gift as he sailed into the end zone.

Touchdown, Minnesota.

"I was floating, man," a smiling Addison said when he was asked about diving into the end zone. "I was floating."

The play call came in with under 4 minutes remaining in the Vikings-Lions NFC North matchup, and Minnesota was on its own 35. An initial miscommunication forced the Vikings to take a timeout and make sure they got it right — which they certainly did. Max Brosmer handed off to Addison, and he was off to the races, turning the jet sweep into a 65-yard score.

"The fact I knew they were just handing it to me, I'm like, 'Yeah, I've gotta do something with it,' " Addison said.

The touchdown all but sealed the win for Minnesota, who kicked one more field goal a couple minutes later to complete its season sweep of Detroit with a 23-10 victory.

Addison reached 21.1 miles per hour on his sprint, then left the ground at the perfect time to avoid stepping out of bounds after being shoved by Daniel Thomas.

"He pushed me, but I still had my left foot in bounds, so I after that one, I gotta leap," Addison said. "I still had one foot in, and I just took off."

The second the play call came through, Addison knew it carried tremendous potential to give the Vikings a holiday spark. They'd practiced the play once on a short week, and it had worked then; he felt confident they'd pull it off again.

Everything came together, including — as Brosmer noted during his press conference — the offensive line giving Addison time to get around the corner and Jalen Nailor making a crucial block, as well.

"I absolutely love the call," Brosmer said. "Did a great job up front. We had kind of set it up all game, and fortunately it hit for us, big time."

"I had four guys around me, and I knew the corner went with me," Nailor detailed. "I hit the corner, and I was like, 'Yeah, he's out of here.' … He got those knees up, and I'm like, 'Yeah, he's 'bout to score.' "

Aaron Jones, Sr., had a perfect vantage point from where he stood on the sideline near the line of scrimmage. He feared for a split second that Aidan Hutchinson may be able to cut off Addison, but the edge defender cut inside first and couldn't pivot back fast enough.

"As soon as we faked the outside zone to Ty [Chandler], the corner and the safety squeeze in, and they don't know (Jordan) has the ball until they see Aidan Hutchinson trying to play out," Jones described. "Then after that, it's just too late. He's so fast. We're looking at the safety on the side thinking, 'OK, he might have the angle,' but it's just the extra effort from Jordan. That 'never die easy' mentality. 'If there's a will, there's a way I'm gonna get in this end zone.' "

Justin Jefferson joked, "I'm just glad he didn't get caught this time," referencing previous plays in which Addison got nearly to the paint but was taken down at the last second.

"It was good he got in that end zone when we really needed it," said Jefferson, whose 30 receiving yards were enough to break Randy Moss’ record through a player’s first six NFL seasons.

And though it's certainly an exciting benchmark to break, "Jets" cared more about the game's result.

"Winning is the main thing, no matter how it gets done," he said.

On Thursday, that included Addison's touchdown and a first-quarter rushing score by Jones. Facing third down from the goal line, Jones shared Addison's "must-score" mindset on the 1-yard run.

"C.J. [Ham] was leading the way. As the play breaks, C.J. turns to me and says, 'All right, let's get this in,' " Jones recounted. "And it was like, 'All right.' You've got to take advantage of goal-line carries.

"They did a good job of staying on their guys, and I found the seam, and C.J. got a piece of [Jack Campbell] and it allowed me to get vertical and put my shoulder down, and he couldn't really tackle me," he continued. "Once C.J. got a piece of him, I just kept driving my feet."

Jones capped the play with his "Bank Vault" celebration, leaping into the waiting arms of Vikings fans in the stands.

"It felt good to get up there," he said, grinning.

Jones finished his day with 18 carries for 53 yards and the TD, with Addison's 65 yards leading the team. Chandler added 24 yards on seven attempts, and Brosmer scrambled twice for 16 yards.

The Vikings relied offensively on ground yardage (and defensively on a whopping six takeaways), as they had just 3 net yards passing after multiple negative plays.

Addison's TD run was Minnesota's first of 60-plus yards by a receiver since Cordarrelle Patterson in the 2014 season opener (67-yarder at the St. Louis Rams).

Minnesota couldn't get anything clicking through the air. But Brosmer protected the ball in his second start and stayed composed, going 9-of-16 passing for 51 yards, no touchdowns and no interceptions. His passer rating was 62.2.

"A lot of learning," Brosmer said. "NFL football is hard. People say that a lot. NFL football is fun, too; that's not me saying I don't enjoy this. My favorite part is the process, and the people around the team and around the facility — that's what makes playing for the Vikings fun.

"To have earned those opportunities and have the guys in the huddle in full support throughout the ups and the downs of our team's success and some really rough patches, too, this year, it's a blessing to be in the huddle, and I'm grateful for it."

Brosmer and the Vikings have now won four straight games ahead of next weekend's season finale against the division-rival Packers. Though they've already been eliminated from the postseason, Minnesota (8-8) is proud of the December football it's played and hopes to finish strong.

"It feels great [to be stacking these wins]," Jefferson said. "I wish we would have started earlier on in the season, but it just feels good, really, to see this team continue to fight and continue to strive to be better. We're not in the dance, but to eliminate one of our division opponents from the playoffs, as well, that's definitely something we were trying to do."
