After Further Review: Everson Griffen's Relentlessness Leads to Forced Fumble

After Further Review is a deeper look at plays or stats after Vikings games…

The Vikings defensive ends had an **impressive showing** against the highly touted Cowboys offensive line on Thursday.

Danielle Hunter recorded a pair of sacks, bringing his team-high total to 9.5 on the season. Brian Robison also recorded one while forcing a fumble to give him 6.0 on the season.

Everson Griffen didn't record a sack, but he did lead the Vikings in tackles tallied by the press box (eight solo). He also recovered the fumble caused by Robison and forced a fumble that was recovered by Eric Kendricks.

Rushing the passer is just one aspect of the position, especially against a Dallas lineup that featured the NFL's leading rusher, Ezekiel Elliott, and mobile quarterback Dak Prescott.

Griffen, Hunter and Robison all played the run well, bolstering a team effort that limited Elliott to 86 yards on 20 carries.

Here's a look at an example of Griffen's relentlessness (with an assist to alertness by Andrew Sendejo) through a series of screenshots:

Dallas goes heavy in the short-yardage situation with two tight ends (Jason Witten and Gavin Escobar at the bottom of the screen) and backup center Joe Looney at the right edge of the offensive line. The Cowboys bring Lucky Whitehead in motion and send Elliott and most of the blockers toward the right as Whitehead takes the handoff from Prescott on a jet sweep.

Griffen spots this and reacts quickly.

The Cowboys try to take advantage of the misdirection and Whitehead's speed, but Griffen's quick read and reaction will be a nice counter. Chad Greenway takes on the block by Escobar, and Xavier Rhodes prepares for Witten. Sendejo starts coming up the field, with 10 yards between he and Whitehead.

Rhodes' work against Witten helps slow down Whitehead, and Sendejo gets a good bit of the Cowboys receiver at the 46 to knock him off balance and out of stride as Griffen follows the football.

The stutter-step allows Griffen to catch Whitehead and wallop him while the ball is a little loose from his body. The lower torso of Kendricks appears at the top of this shot as the linebacker is also hustling to the football. Griffen punches the ball out at the 42…

… and Kendricks recovers it at the 34. The Vikings have four players hustling to the football during the significant turnover.
