3 Observations: Carlson Perfect in Practice After Winning Kicking Gig

EAGAN, Minn. — The Vikings put a bow on an accelerated week of practice in preparation for Friday's preseason game against the Seahawks.

Minnesota practiced in helmets and shorts for just under two hours on a picturesque day at Twin Cities Orthopedics Performance Center.

The Vikings and Seahawks meet in the third preseason game for each team Friday at U.S. Bank Stadium. Kickoff is at 7 p.m. (CT).

Here are three observations from Wednesday's session:

1. Lucky No. 7

Vikings kicker Daniel Carlson was a perfect seven for seven on kicks in Wednesday's session, the first time the rookie has kicked in front of the media since the team released Kai Forbath on Monday.

Carlson, who wears No. 7, made a pair of 33-yard extra point tries and was also successful from 37, 40, 42, 45 and 49 yards.

The former Auburn standout has also made seven kicks in preseason games, hitting five extra points and a pair of field goals, including a 57-yarder against Denver.

2. More late magic

Kirk Cousins was up to his old tricks again on Wednesday.

The quarterback led a last-minute touchdown drive in Wednesday's practice by finding wide receiver Laquon Treadwell for a game-tying, 6-yard touchdown with 12 seconds left.

The offense trailed 14-7 with 1 minute and 50 seconds left in the fourth quarter and the ball at its own 40-yard line.

Cousins and the offense picked up 29 yards in seven plays before the quarterback hit Treadwell for 10 yards to get to the 21-yard line.

Wide receiver Stefon Diggs then drew a pass interference call on cornerback Xavier Rhodes to put the ball on the 6-yard line with only 16 seconds left.

Cousins then found Treadwell in the back of the end zone for the score.

The successful sequence came two days after Cousins led another late drive and connected with tight end Kyle Rudolph for a score on Monday.

3. Picking up the tempo

The Vikings first-team offense mostly ran against the scout team defense on Monday.

Minnesota picked up the pace when doing so, going up-tempo on the majority of the plays, something Vikings Offensive Coordinator John DeFilippo mentioned earlier this week and an idea Cousins touched on in his Wednesday press conference.

The quick pace is designed to get the offense in a rhythm and not allow the defense to get comfortable.
