Vikings Honor Hubert Humphrey's Legacy

MINNEAPOLIS —The legacy left by Hubert H. Humphrey has spanned multiple generations in Minnesota and beyond and remains intertwined with the Vikings.

Part of the former U.S. Vice President's legacy — and his deep love for the Minnesota Vikings — has been honored inside U.S. Bank Stadium, which has replaced the former Metrodome that was named in honor of Humphrey.

A unique picture of Humphrey with Max Winter, a founder of the Vikings, is part of the Art Collection. Humphrey and Winter are standing together with Humphrey in a Vikings hat and holding a Vikings polo.

Another Minnesota icon, Lucy from the Peanuts comic strip, appears in the background behind the men. Humphrey personalized the photo, "To Max Winter with admiration and friendship — Hubert Humphrey."

A copy of the photo has been framed and placed near a landscape painting of Minneapolis circa the opening of the Hubert H. Humphrey Metrodome.

Vikings Owners Mark and Zygi Wilf were pleased to welcome more than 20 members of Humphrey's family on Sunday at U.S. Bank Stadium and present them with a framed copy of the picture.

"Vice President Humphrey and the Humphrey family are important in the United States' and Minnesota's history," Mark Wilf said during the presentation. "We wanted to recognize that because, not only was the Vice President's name on the Metrodome, but he and his family have been great supporters of the Minnesota Vikings and are an institution in Minnesota."

Family members in attendance included sons, Skip, Robert and Doug, who have continued their passion for the Vikings through two more generations.

More than 20 members of the Humphrey family were welcomed to Sunday's game by Vikings Owners Mark and Zygi Wilf. Humphrey's legacy and strong support of the Vikings is celebrated in the U.S. Bank Stadium Art Collection.

"His spirit is here. I can tell you that," Skip Humphrey said. "He loved football and he loved the Vikings to a degree of personal attachment to the players, the owners and of course, the public. This is very special, and I want to thank the Vikings for continuing that tradition of keeping the history while you create the history."

Skip Humphrey said the inclusion of Humphrey in the Art Collection and the presentation by the Vikings gave younger generations of family members "a sense of how important my father's efforts were to this city and this state, but at the same time how much he reflected the wonderful friendship that the people have here."

Buck Humphrey, grandson of the Vice President and a longtime Vikings Season Ticket Holder, said U.S. Bank Stadium exceeds all the other NFL stadiums he's visited.

"This stadium is incredible. What a great win for the state of Minnesota," Buck Humphrey said. "This is the best NFL experience.

"I think everybody in Minnesota has got to thank the Wilfs for being such great supporters of the community and really wanting to win," he added. "I think that's probably the most important to most of us Vikes fans, but [I also appreciate] the respect that they've shown my grandfather and my children's great grandfather, who meant so much to so many people and did such great things."

Mark Wilf said the Vikings appreciate Humphrey's accomplishments and the way he passed his love for the Vikings through family members.

"They've been great supporters of the Vikings, starting with Vice President Humphrey," Mark Wilf said. "He's such a great football fan, American and Civil Rights leader, great in so many areas, a supporter of Israel, so we have a lot of admiration for Vice President Humphrey and the Humphrey family, and to dedicate this area in his honor means a lot."
