International Fan of Year & Vikings Season Ticket Members Soak Up 2026 NFL Draft

More than 15 years ago, John Macdonald watched the 2009 NFC Championship Game and found himself enamored with the Vikings.

He's never turned back, developing into a truly devoted fan from his hometown of Ashford, Kent, in England and serving as the Co-Founder and Vice President of the UK and Ireland Minnesota Vikings Fan Club.

Macdonald's love for the Purple was recognized this winter when he was named the Vikings International Fan of the Year, an honor that came with a trip to the 2026 NFL Draft. He and a close friend and fellow Vikings fan, Rich, made the 3,700-mile trip to Pittsburgh for the weekend's festivities.

Beyond connecting with other Vikings fans and enjoying unique behind-the-scenes draft experiences for International and Season Ticket Members from around the league, the trip's highlight for Macdonald was an opportunity to announce Minnesota's second Round 5 selection: cornerback Charles "Chuck" Demmings out of Stephen F. Austin.

"I know so many amazing people from all over the world who follow the Vikings and do so much to help it grow in their own countries. So many of them would have been as worthy of winning this, but to be selected is such honor," Macdonald said. "It was an experience of a lifetime to go to the draft and announce a pick for my team. It truly feels like the Mount Everest of NFL Fandom."

Macdonald formed bonds with other Vikings fans who were part of Minnesota's Inner Circle, a name given to the selected groups from all 32 teams that received front-row seats to Rounds 1-3 of the draft and experiences such as the Draft Theatre Tour and Red Carpet Walk. Those fans included Vikings Season Ticket Members Timothy and Lynda Giguere, as well as Twin Cities Orthopedics' Kathy Heimer and her husband Adam.

Giguere

Timothy Giguere noted he's been a Vikings fan for more than 50 years and, in addition to attending home games, has traveled to road games in Green Bay, San Diego (when the Chargers were based there), London (on two occasions) and to the team's first game in Dublin this past season.

Giguere dedicates a room at home for the jerseys, mini helmets and Vikings bobbleheads he's collected over the years, and he tries to attend training camp annually.

Attending the NFL Draft allowed Giguere to cross off a big item on his fandom bucket list.

"The chance to go to the draft and be in the Inner Circle is a lifelong dream for me — the draft has always been one of my favorite parts of the NFL season," Giguere said.

The only thing that could beat it?

"Sitting quietly in the Vikings [Draft] Room," Giguere quipped with a grin.

For Heimer, attending the NFL Draft and hearing the names called of brand-new Vikings was a special experience for someone who's fervently followed the team since college.

Heimer noted that she actually grew up in Wisconsin but was never an NFL fan. When she relocated to attend the University of Minnesota, she quickly became a Gophers fan and then a Vikings fan — so when told by her employer she'd been selected for the NFL Draft trip, Heimer was overcome by excitement.

Heimers

"This is truly a special honor for me representing TCO. It's a special place to work, and the Vikings have treated us wonderfully well," Heimer said. "This has been a surprise of a lifetime, followed by the experience of a lifetime for me.

"Seeing the Vikings make their first-round pick from the Inner Circle was one of the most fun days I've ever had," she added.

Heimer and her fellow Vikings fans also appreciated the opportunity to connect with fans from around the league and share a camaraderie based around their respective passions.

Giguere snapped selfies with other fans and noted, "It's fun to see how they love and support their teams, too."

A handful of Vikings Season Ticket Members attended the 2026 NFL Draft in Pittsburgh and were a part of the team's inner circle near the main stage.

Attending the NFL Draft has become another treasured memory for Macdonald, whose most valued experience to date has been watching the Minneapolis Miracle game in January 2018 — an especially rewarding experience considering the time difference in the UK.

"The game was on at 'silly o'clock' in the morning," Macdonald laughed. "When [Stefon] Diggs scored that TD, I was screaming and shouting so loud that I not only woke up everyone in my house but also the neighbors' house."

More and more fans across the pond faithfully tune in for Vikings games — even at "silly o'clock" — every year, and Macdonald is proud to continue representing the Purple and Gold.

"Seeing the Vikings fandom grow in the UK is amazing; the amount of support the Vikings have given us to grow the game over here is brilliant," Macdonald said. "From our first-ever International Series game in 2013 to what we have now, it really feels like the Vikings are making big strides over here and are fast becoming one of the most followed teams in the UK."
