Randy Moss Shares 'Endless' Wisdom with Justin Jefferson & Vikings Pass Catchers

EAGAN, Minn. — When Vikings receivers head from a team meeting in the auditorium to their position room, they walk past a large photo of Randy Moss among mounted photos of Pro Football Hall of Famers who spent most of their careers with Minnesota.

The images serve as a reminder of the Legends who have gone before, leaving an indelible mark on the Vikings organization.

This week, however, the Vikings pass catchers didn't just have Moss' photo — they got the real thing.

Moss spent Wednesday and Thursday at Twin Cities Orthopedics Performance Center, where he attended the Vikings joint practices with the Ravens, spent time in the receivers meeting room and sat in for a team meeting.

Following the first practice in which Minnesota's offense lagged a bit, Moss urged the current Vikings to bring a little more juice Thursday.

"He told us he felt like we were kind of slow to start, which we kind of felt ourselves, but then finished on a high note," said Jeshaun Jones. "That was the big emphasis today, to come in with energy and start if off high.

"That definitely sets a fire up under me," added Jones, who noted he had a Randy Moss Fathead on his bedroom wall growing up.

Iowa native T.J. Hockenson heard all about Moss from his father, a Vikings fan, and appreciates the opportunity to now learn from the Legend who had so much success in Purple.

" 'You got Mossed' — that's a real thing," Hockenson said. "To watch those games and see what he was able to do was insane, for sure."

Justin Jefferson has built a relationship over the years with Moss, who's been a supporter of the younger phenom from day one. Jefferson may have broken several Moss' records, but he's always looking to pick his brain and receive insight from "The Freak" himself.

The mutual fandom between the two is evident.

"The information he has is endless," Jefferson said. "The things that he's seen, things he's been through, his experience — I mean, there's no better person out here, besides Keenan McCardell, who can teach me these different things on how to be a true route runner. A true receiver."

Vikings Head Coach Kevin O'Connell told media members Thursday that upon accepting his role with Minnesota in 2022, he prioritized having Moss back around the team and organization.

O'Connell has emphasized the respect of Vikings Legends during his tenure. And while he wants players and coaches to hold those former players in high regard, O'Connell also recognizes the impact of young athletes learning from them.

"I mean, that's a room I was not going to walk in and start talking about receiver play," O'Connell quipped. "I know that for sure, between Keenan and Randy. But Randy's become a guy I talk to quite often. He talks to me more than I did when I was teammates with him.

"I remind him of that often," O'Connell added, laughing. "But I love him. I love him to death, and all his experiences and what he's been through personally, he's got so much more perspective to share on and off the field, and he's willing to share it."

Myles Price is soaking in every bit of that perspective he can.

The second-year receiver grinned widely while sharing how surreal it felt to sit next to Moss during his position meeting.

"He was giving me tips; I couldn't believe it, I'm not gonna lie," Price smiled. "He's sitting casually, I'm eating my food and he tapped me like, 'Yeah, right there, you could have given him this instead.' And I'm like, 'You're right. I should have done that.' And then he gets out on the field before practice, he comes out here and shows me a little vet move I can apply to my game.

"I think that's just so cool," Price continued. "It's one of the greatest feelings, knowing I have a guy like Randy Moss out here showing me the ways."

The sentiment is shared by Jordan Addison, who's grateful for any opportunity to learn from Moss.

Addison noted the detailed feedback and advice Moss provided, encouraging the Vikings receivers to be intentional about footwork at the top of their routes.

"That's something I took away, when [the opponents] are in zone, just making sure we're attacking the ball and making sure our routes are clean," Addison said. "It's awesome. It's always great being able to hang out with a Legend and talk to him and just get to kick it with him.

"Before I ever met him, I just thought he was unreal," Addison added. "And seeing him now, he's a cool dude. He's got that swag to him, you know? You can see why he was the great player he was."

As the Vikings receivers wrap up joint practices and look ahead to Saturday's preseason game, they're doing so with a wealth of extra knowledge from one of the best to ever do it.

They don't take that for granted.

"For him to be out here, I mean, he's on retirement — he doesn't have to be here," Jefferson said, grinning. "It's really cool to get those tips from him and to apply those tips out here in my game and see them really work. It's been a pretty cool two days."
