Welcome home, Vikings players, coaches and staff.
After a whirlwind international adventure that included a pair of come-from-behind efforts against Pittsburgh and Cleveland (the latter being successful), the team made its way back to Minnesota last week for a much-needed and well-deserved bye week.
The good news? The Vikings (3-2) will play their first home game in nearly a month on Sunday.
The not-so-good news? Minnesota's first test out of the bye this week is against the defending Super Bowl Champion Eagles. Philadelphia (4-2) is looking to get back to its winning ways after dropping back-to-back contests to Denver and the New York Giants.
Sunday's game will be the 38th in franchise history (including postseason games) where Minnesota has faced the reigning Super Bowl winners the following season (this season is the 32nd season the Vikings have done so). The Vikings are 12-25 all-time in those games, but seven of those victories have come at home (in 17 games), with the most recent being a 20-19 win against the Giants in Week 17 of the 2008 season.
Despite not playing this past week, the Vikings saw some movement in this week's Power Rankings, with Minnesota falling slightly back in most lists. Here's a look at where the Vikings landed heading into Week 7:
No. 19 (down 3 spots): Eric Edholm, NFL.com
The two questions on everyone's minds: 1) When will J.J. McCarthy return? 2) How much faith will the staff have in him when he does? The answer to No. 1 might be Week 7 against the Eagles, but it also wouldn't be stunning if McCarthy needed more time to heal. If Carson Wentz is the QB again, he'll have a chance to beat his old team while it's down, coming off two straight losses. The Week 6 bye came at a good time for the Vikings, who also should be getting RT Brian O'Neill, LB Blake Cashman and edge rusher Andrew Van Ginkel back over the coming weeks; the arrow is pointing upward. But as of right now, it's hard to know where this team is, given the topsy-turvy start and the rash of injuries.
No. 17 (down 1 spot): Maurice Moton, Bleacher Report
The Minnesota Vikings limped into their Week 6 bye with a banged-up offense. Running back Aaron Jones, Sr., is on Injured Reserve with a hamstring injury. Starting quarterback J.J. McCarthy is recovering from a high ankle sprain, and his backup, Carson Wentz, played through a left shoulder injury behind an offensive line that featured three reserves [and eventually a fourth] filling in for starters.
While a healthier offense should help the Vikings come out strong from an off week, McCarthy must show improvement upon his return to action. In two games this season, he threw for just 301 yards, two touchdowns and three interceptions with a 58.5 percent completion rate. According to NFL Network's Tom Pelissero, McCarthy's status for Week 7 is uncertain.
No. 16 (up 1 spot): Pete Prisco, CBS Sports
[The Vikings] come off their bye with a big home game against a desperate Eagles team.
No. 21 (down 3 spots): Nate Davis, USA Today
QB1 J.J. McCarthy's return is still TBD. The Vikes schedule is not, now set to serve up four consecutive opponents who qualified for last season's playoffs. Interesting conundrum.
No. 19 (down 3 spots): Conor Orr, Sports Illustrated
Now we wait and see whether Kevin O'Connell will give us what we truly want: the Carson Wentz revenge game against a reeling Eagles team. I understand J.J. McCarthy is back [at practice], but Carson Wentz may have won over the team after a gutsy performance in London. What's the harm in giving him one more week specifically for my amusement?
No. 17 (down 1 spot): Vinnie Iyer, Sporting News
The Vikings need to decide which QB is healthiest and best to operate the Kevin O'Connell passing offense coming out of a bye. They might be motivated to make it a Carson Wentz revenge game at home vs. the Eagles.
No. 19 (down 2 spots): Frank Schwab, Yahoo! Sports
J.J. McCarthy has returned to practice, but the Vikings aren't committing to his status for Week 7.
