NFL Power Rankings: 5-0 Start Helps Vikings Reach Top 5

For the third consecutive season, the Minnesota Vikings will enter their bye week after just five games played. For the second time within those three years, though, they have done so with a 5-0 record.

While Minnesota's play hasn't been exactly perfect, the Vikings are just one of three remaining teams with an unblemished mark, joining Kansas City (4-0) and San Francisco (5-0). Minnesota's latest outing was its most complete one yet across all three phases, as the offense took a step forward and the defense and special teams continued its early-season dominance in a 23-13 victory at New Orleans on Sunday.

The Vikings 5-0 start this season is their 11th unbeaten start through five weeks in franchise history; Minnesota reached the specific mark each year from 1973 to 1976 (Minnesota was 5-0-1 through Week 6 in 1976) as well as in 1998, 2000 (the team had a Week 4 bye), 2003, 2009, 2016 and 2024.

Sunday's win gave Minnesota a boost in this week's Power Rankings, with the biggest jump being six spots. Here's a look at where the Vikings landed heading into Week 6 (make sure to scroll below for some notable numbers that deserve a closer look during the break):

No. 7 (up 4 spots): Nick Shook – NFL.com

I know the Vikings have a truly special defense. I'd been wondering whether their offense would ever show up. We saw signs of it in the second half against the Saints, a stretch in which Kyler Murray dropped a pass over three defenders into Justin Jefferson's bucket for a touchdown and led an attack that scored 17 points in the final two quarters. There are still plenty of kinks to work out, but Murray is beginning to look more comfortable in Kevin O'Connell's system.

No. 3 (up 3 spots): Kris Knox – Bleacher Report

The Minnesota Vikings moved to 5-0 on Sunday, and for the first time this season, things seemed to be clicking in all phases.

Having Justin Jefferson back in the lineup was huge, and it helped Kyler Murray deliver his best performance as a Viking so far. Aaron Jones, Sr., returned from a first-quarter knee injury and ran for 113 yards, while Minnesota's defense held the New Orleans Saints to a mere 142 total yards.

The Vikings defense has looked championship-caliber all season. If Murray and the offense can continue to make positive strides after next week's bye, this team could remain undefeated for the foreseeable future.

No. 3 (no change): Pete Prisco – CBS Sports

[The Vikings] just keep on winning with their defense. But the offense showed some life with Kyler Murray in the victory over the Saints.

No. 9 (no change): Nate Davis – USA Today

[The Vikings are] allowing the fewest points per game, the lowest EPA per play, have the best turnover differential (+6), the third-most pressures (87) and are tied for the third-most sacks (17). And now QB Kyler Murray is showing signs of a reversion to his former Pro Bowl form. Still need to see how they perform against better competition and/or [when] forced to pass from a deficit. But beware this team, though the bye arrived at the wrong time.

No. 4 (up 3 spots): Josh Kendall and Chad Graff – The Athletic

Discount this team at your own peril. Sure, the offense has struggled a fair amount. But this defense is as real as it gets, and it looks like the offense might be turning a corner. Kyler Murray is using his legs again, running for 51 yards in addition to his 229 passing yards with a touchdown on Sunday. If the offense gets rolling, look out.

No. 7 (up 6 spots): Conor Orr – Sports Illustrated

In a win over the Saints, Kyler Murray discovered a quarterback's true superpower: Not even bothering to count the amount of people covering Justin Jefferson because it just doesn't matter. Everything should be smooth sailing from here on out.

No. 4 (up 2 spots): Vinnie Iyer – Sporting News

The Vikings are getting it done where it counts, even though they might not seem to be so clean from game to game. They are up to 10 takeaways in five games and now rank second in time of possession (33:37) after having the ball for almost 40 minutes vs. the Saints.

No. 7 (up 2 spots): Frank Schwab – Yahoo! Sports

Justin Jefferson's return changed the Vikings offense. Not many receivers are capable of making the circus catch he did for a touchdown with three Saints defenders in his vicinity.

The offense playing its best game, in the first game this season that Kyler Murray and Jefferson were healthy throughout, was a big story. The other one is the Vikings unrelenting blitz strategy. Coordinator Brian Flores sent a blitz on 23 of 27 Saints dropbacks (85.2%), according to Pro Football Focus. New Orleans had 87 net passing yards and 142 total yards. Blitzing as much as this season's Vikings have is a fascinating experiment, and there's no sign the Vikings are going to ease off it.

Before the team gets a week of well-earned rest and recovery, here are some numbers that deserve a closer look during the break:

5 & 10: With Sunday's victory, Vikings Head Coach Kevin O'Connell became just the 10th head coach in NFL history to start 5-0 multiple times within his first five seasons at the helm. Minnesota has also recorded its fifth season with a five-game win streak under O'Connell, marking the second-longest such streak of seasons to begin a head coach's career all-time (O'Connell only trails San Francisco's George Seifert, who accomplished the feat in each of his first seven seasons as head coach).

Additionally, the Vikings have won 10 consecutive games dating back to Week 14 of last season. That is the longest active streak in the NFL, and it's tied for the third-longest regular-season win streak in franchise history (Week 14, 1999-Week 7, 2000).

24 & 25: With his 113 rushing yards on Sunday, running back Aaron Jones, Sr., crossed the triple-digit threshold for the 24th time in his career. Jones tied a career high in carries with 25, marking only the second time he's done so; the lone other instance occurred in Week 17 of the 2019 season, when Jones led Green Bay to a 23-20 victory at Detroit, just 27 days after celebrating his 25th birthday.

Kyler Murray finished Sunday's outing by completing 24 of his 30 pass attempts (80%) for 229 yards and a touchdown and added 51 yards on the ground on 10 carries. He became the first Vikings QB in team history to throw for 200-plus yards with an 80% completion percentage while also rushing for 50-plus yards. That specific stat line has only happened 25 total times in NFL history, with Murray tying Lamar Jackson for the most such games (three).

Minnesota has also given up just 25 total points in the second half this season, the lowest in the league.

32, 33 & 34: Will Reichard continues to set a new standard in the NFL with each passing week. The third-year kicker out of Alabama connected on three more field goals against the Saints; his first one — a 40-yarder on the Vikings opening possession — pushed Reichard past Fuad Reveiz (31) for the second-longest streak of consecutive made field goals in franchise history. Reichard's two other kicks (54 and 55 yards, respectively) increased his total to 34 straight, one shy of tying Gary Anderson's franchise record.

Although Minnesota's active streak of consecutive games with four or more sacks came to an end on Sunday, Andrew Van Ginkel kept another sacks streak alive with his late takedown of Tyler Shough. "Gink's" fourth sack of the season pushed Minnesota's streak of recording at least one sack to 33 consecutive games.

Another area the Vikings have been superb in this year is controlling the clock. Minnesota currently ranks second in average time of possession (33:38), trailing only Chicago (35:12). The Vikings have posted season highs in possession in back-to-back weeks (39:11 in Week 4; 39:37 on Sunday).

80: The number of total plays the Vikings defense has been a part of over the past two games, the fewest amount of snaps in the NFL during that stretch. The Bears were the next closest at 91 plays, while the league average hovered around 125.33 plays per team.

41: How many minutes Minnesota's defense has been on the field during its past two contests combined (out of 120 minutes total). Brian Flores' group has only been on the field for a combined 17:05 of game action during the second half of those games — essentially equating to three quarters of complete rest.

From an offensive perspective, the Vikings have a point differential of +41 in the fourth quarter this season (44 to 3), the best mark in the NFL by 20 points.

75: Sunday's contest not only marked the 75th career touchdown scored by Jones, but it also was the 75th game of O'Connell's career as a head coach (he's 48-27, including playoffs).

13 & 14: With his two interceptions against New Orleans, Vikings cornerback Byron Murphy, Jr., has tallied 14 picks since joining Minnesota in 2023. That is tied with Houston's Derek Stingley, Jr., for the most among cornerbacks during that span.

Opposing offenses have struggled to find much success against Minnesota's defense, especially on third down, as the Vikings have allowed only 14 third-down conversions in 63 tries.

Speaking of shutting a game down, out of 20 quarters played this season, the Vikings haven't allowed their opponent to reach the end zone in 14 of them. That is the most as a team through the first five weeks of a season since 2012 (coincidentally 14 years ago).
