NFL Power Rankings: Vikings Enter Bye Week in the Middle of the Pack

If the NFL has taught us anything through the first five weeks of the 2025 season, it's that no lead is safe.

Of the 78 games played through Week 5, 25 of them have featured a game-winning score in either the final three minutes of the fourth quarter or in overtime, the most in any season at this point in NFL history. Incredibly, there have been 17 games with a go-ahead score occurring within the final minute of regulation, the most through five weeks of a season since the 1970 merger.

In Week 5 alone, half of its games (seven of 14 total) had a game-winning score in the final three minutes of regulation or in OT, tying for the most such games in a single week since… well, Week 3. (Prior to that, it last happened in Week 15 of the 2022 season.) Additionally, of those 17 total contests through five weeks that saw a go-ahead score in the final 60 seconds of regulation, five of them have happened in the past five days.

That recent and particular five-game string of chaos inside the final minute of regulation started in another continent, as the Minnesota Vikings closed its latest European trip in London with a 21-17 victory over the Cleveland Browns on Sunday at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. With his team trailing 17-14, Vikings QB Carson Wentz orchestrated a game-winning drive; he went 9-for-9 for 71 passing yards, with his final throw resulting in a 12-yard touchdown to Jordan Addison with 25 seconds remaining.

The victory not only moved the Vikings to 5-0 all-time in regular-season games in London, but it gave Minnesota a winning record (3-2) heading into its much-needed bye. The Vikings have a Week 6 bye for just the sixth time in franchise history, with all six seasons sporting a 3-2 record or better (3-2 in 2006 and 2025; 4-1 in 1992; 5-0 in 1998, 2003, 2016 and 2024).

Minnesota's win also helped the team move up in most of this week's power rankings, with the biggest jump being four spots. Here's a look at where the Vikings landed heading into Week 6:

The Vikings earned a split on their two-game British Isles jaunt, with Carson Wentz turning in a gutsy effort … against the Browns. They hit the bye at 3-2, and since 1990, teams with that record have made the playoffs 50.3 percent of the time (compared to 22.3% for 2-3 teams).

Fumbling and missing a field goal in the fourth quarter is not the ideal path to victory, but Wentz made some big throws late, and Justin Jefferson took over when called upon. Jordan Addison also responded to his benching to catch three straight passes, including the go-ahead score, in the fourth quarter. Minnesota can still be dangerous, even if there's plenty of work to do.

No. 16 (up 2 spots): Brent Sobleski, Bleacher Report

Vikings Head Coach Kevin O'Connell is a wizard. One can go as far to say he's nearing the stage where he could be the NFL's version of Gandalf the White with his mastery of quarterback development.

No. 17 (no change): Pete Prisco, CBS Sports

Rallying to beat the Browns and get a split of their two overseas games was big for [the Vikings]. They now head to their bye.

No. 18 (down 1 spot): Nate Davis, USA Today

The Eagles, Chargers and Lions are on the other side of [the Vikings] Week 6 bye. Do they really want to drop greenhorn QB1 J.J. McCarthy and his injured ankle into that meat grinder?

No. 16 (down 2 spots): Josh Kendall, The Athletic

A well-earned (and probably much-needed) break is on the horizon [for the Vikings] after becoming the first team in league history to play back-to-back international games in two different countries. It hasn't been the prettiest start for this team, and the Vikings haven't exactly beaten top teams, but Kevin O'Connell got Jordan Addison rolling late after an early benching, as things trend toward J.J. McCarthy coming back after the bye.

No. 16 (up 4 spots): Conor Orr, Sports Illustrated

Carson Wentz willing himself back on the field to lead a touchdown drive with almost none of his regular complement of starting offensive linemen was impressive, as were some of the underlying play calls from Kevin O'Connell that kept the team afloat on this endless European roadtrip. Now, linebacker Blake Cashman and lineman Donovan Jackson will rejoin the team at practice.

No. 16 (no change): Vinnie Iyer, Sporting News

The Vikings have been inconsistent early in the season, but they are finding some offensive punch with Carson Wentz settling in with all of his weapons on offense. It's a good sign that Minnesota can win without being takeaway-dependent.

No. 17 (no change): Frank Schwab, Yahoo! Sports

Carson Wentz took some huge hits and handled adversity very well. He threw for 236 yards and a touchdown, with a passer rating of 102.1 against a good Browns defense in a last-minute win. It seems J.J. McCarthy will start when healthy, but Wentz will be on standby if McCarthy struggles again.
