EAGAN, Minn. — The Minnesota Vikings on Wednesday bolstered depth at quarterback by signing John Wolford to their practice squad.
Wolford, 30, appeared in seven NFL games and made four starts from 2020-22, including one start with the L.A. Rams in 2020 when Vikings Head Coach Kevin O'Connell was his offensive coordinator.
In that contest, an 18-7 home win against Arizona to conclude the regular season, Wolford completed 22 of 38 passes for 231 yards with an interception and passer rating of 64.7. He was sacked twice but added 56 rushing yards on six carries, helping the Rams finish 10-6 and prep for their playoff run.
Wolford also logged reps backing up Jared Goff the following week as L.A. topped Seattle in the Wild Card Round of the NFC Playoffs. He appeared in three games as a backup for the Rams behind Matthew Stafford in 2021 but only attempted four passes that season.
In 2022, Wolford started three games for the Rams but left the final of those contests early and was replaced by Baker Mayfield.
Wolford initially began his NFL career as an undrafted free agent with the Jets (out of Wake Forest) in 2018. Since leaving the Rams in 2023, he has spent time with the Buccaneers, Panthers and Jaguars but has not played in a regular-season game since Dec. 8, 2022.
Wolford joins the Vikings a day after the team placed Carson Wentz on Injured Reserve because of a shoulder injury that will require surgery.
Minnesota is anticipated to start J.J. McCarthy at Detroit in Week 9 and have rookie Max Brosmer back up the second-year pro.
