EAGAN, Minn. — The Vikings are continuing to grow the game of football beyond Minnesota.
The team announced Monday it's partnering with the Fargo Park District to launch a girls flag football program serving high schoolers in the Red River Valley.
The pilot program, which will provide an exciting opportunity for female athletes to compete in one of the country's fastest-growing sports, is open to young women in grades 9-12 from Fargo and West Fargo, North Dakota (as well as Moorhead, Minnesota, and nearby communities). The North Dakota program aligns with the Vikings ongoing efforts to grow girls flag football and empower young women through sport, while laying the groundwork for future expansions across Minnesota, Iowa, North Dakota and South Dakota.
Vikings Vice President of Social Impact Brett Taber emphasized the importance of providing "organized, high-quality" flag-football opportunities for girls.
"This program is an important step in expanding girls flag football throughout the region and building a foundation for future growth," Taber said.
The eight-week season will include weekly practices, six regular-season games, league playoffs and the opportunity to compete for a state championship. Games will be played on Sundays, with practices held one evening per week at the Fargo Parks Sports Center or Fargo-area schools.
"This program represents an exciting step forward for girls' athletics in our region," said Fargo Park District Executive Director Susan Faus. "Partnering with the Minnesota Vikings allows us to provide a high-quality experience that emphasizes skill development, teamwork and confidence."
Teams will consist of a minimum of 10 players, with capacity for up to eight teams. Registration is $50 per participant, with full-coverage scholarships available for eligible athletes. Space is limited and filled on a first-come, first-served basis, with a waitlist offered if capacity is reached.
