Winter Park To Host Regional Combine On Saturday

EDEN PRAIRIE, Minn. —The Vikings will host an NFL Regional Combine on Saturday at Winter Park.

Regional combines are an alternative way for draft-eligible players who weren't invited to last week's NFL Scouting Combine in Indianapolis to get noticed by NFL teams.

More than 180 players are scheduled to work out and participate in timing and testing drills on Saturday. Results and workout videos will be available for all 32 NFL teams.

There are five regional combines held across the country.

"It's meant to be for the guys that didn't get a chance to go to Indy," said Matt Birk, the NFL's Director of Football Development. "We try to host them with clubs that are great to work with and have an indoor facility that works.

"The Vikings were gracious enough to open their doors and let us do it."

Birk, a St. Paul native and former sixth-round pick out of Harvard who was selected to six Pro Bowls as center with the Vikings and Baltimore Ravens, said the regional combines are a chance for players from smaller schools to showcase their skills.

"Any college football player that has the dream of playing in the NFL, we want to give them that opportunity," Birk said. "Our clubs look at everybody and there have been so many great players who have come out of smaller schools or out of obscurity, every roster spot is valuable."

Defensive workouts begin at 8 a.m. while offensive workouts start at 1:45 p.m. The event is closed to the public.
