The Vikings announced on Wednesday that the club has claimed RB Ameer Abdullah off of waivers. To make room of the 55-man roster for Abdullah the Vikings released RB Roc Thomas.
Abdullah (5-9, 203) joins the Vikings active roster after being waived by the Detroit Lions (11/7/18). The Homewood, Alabama native originally was drafted by Detroit in the 2nd round of the 2015 NFL Draft (54thoverall). Abdullah has played in 35 career games and earned 22 starts, notching 6 rushing and 3 receiving touchdowns. The Nebraska graduate finished 5th in the NFL and 2nd among rookies in 2015 with 1,857 all-purpose yards (597 rushing, 183 receiving and 1,077 kickoff) in his debut season. He was placed on Injured Reserve (9/21/16) following only two appearances during the 2016 season. Abdullah recorded a career-high 4 rushing touchdowns and 5 total touchdowns in 2017. The 4th-year running back has seen action in 3 contests this season, grabbing 2 receptions for 18 yards and 4 kick returns for 107 yards (averaging 26.75 yards per return).
