EAGAN, Minn. — The Vikings on Wednesday announced they have re-signed former Gophers quarterback Tanner Morgan to the practice squad.

In order to make room on the practice squad for Morgan, the Vikings released defensive lineman Sheldon Day.

Additionally, Minnesota placed running back Cam Akers on Injured Reserve. Akers suffered an Achilles injury Sunday in Atlanta.

Morgan signed with the Vikings practice squad on Oct. 5 a day after backup quarterback Nick Mullens landed on the Injury Report with a back injury. He helped the Vikings in practices as the team prepared to face the Chiefs that week. Morgan was released on Oct. 10 when the Vikings added Sean Mannion to the practice squad.

Vikings Head Coach Kevin O'Connell spoke with media members the following day and said, "I do want to thank Tanner Morgan for his short time here.

"He's already started his coaching career over there at the U (University of Minnesota), appreciate Coach [P.J.] Fleck letting him take a couple days to come join us, and what an impressive kid

Tanner is," O'Connell said on Oct. 11. "He's got a heck of a future ahead of him, for sure."

The Vikings lost Kirk Cousins to a season-ending Achilles injury at Green Bay on Oct. 29. Mullens has remained on Injured Reserve. Rookie Jaren Hall started in Week 9 at Atlanta but left the game late in the first quarter because of a concussion. Joshua Dobbs, who was acquired on Oct. 31 ahead of the NFL's trade deadline, relieved Hall and rallied Minnesota to a 31-28 victory.

Morgan originally entered the NFL as an undrafted free agent with the Pittsburgh Steelers in May 2023, but he was released by the team following the 2023 preseason.

A six-year student-athlete at the University of Minnesota (2017-22), Morgan started 47 of the 51 games he appeared in for the Gophers, setting the school record for wins by a starting QB (33). He completed a school record 62.2 percent of his passes during his career (661 of 1,063), recording 9,454 passing yards and 65 touchdowns. The completions, attempts, percentage, yardage and passing touchdowns rank second all-time in Gophers history.

Morgan, who is from Union, Kentucky, threw a touchdown pass in a school-record 18 consecutive games from Dec. 26, 2018-Nov. 13, 2020.
