Reflecting on Impact of Vikings Annual Crucial Catch Game

crucial-catch-cheer-2560

The Vikings annual Crucial Catch game took place this season on Oct. 13 at U.S. Bank Stadium and held great significance to Vikings fans, employees and football personnel alike.

The league-wide Crucial Catch initiative brings awareness to a variety of different cancers, as well as emphasizes the importance of early detection and risk reduction of cancer.

Each season, we hold this game near and dear to our hearts as we honor those affected by cancer.

Here are my top-three favorite game moments from the Vikings-Eagles matchup:

1. Personalized support via poms

One of my favorite things about our Crucial Catch game is that we honor a variety of different cancers, and we were each given a pair of colored poms to represented a specific cancer. This year, I represented pediatric cancer with gold poms. This was particularly special to me since I have done many appearances as an MVC at the University of Minnesota Masonic Children's hospital. I have met many little fighters that have inspired me, so I was incredibly honored to bring awareness to their cause.

2. 'Stronger than cancer'

Another favorite moment of mine was the halftime performance, where Carly Bevier sang a cover of "Fight Song." Carly herself is a cancer survivor who appeared on America's Got Talent. This was a powerful moment, as the field filled with cancer survivors and their stories were displayed on the big screen. We got to see a glimpse into their journey and see how strong they are. It was very humbling to all come together, support one another and show that together we are "stronger than cancer."

3. Connecting with fans

My last favorite moment from this game was my interaction with the fans. I met so many inspiring survivors that impacted my day even more. It made me feel grateful for the ability to help the NFL raise awareness to a variety of cancers and how we can make a difference. This game always impacts me in many ways; my family and close family friends have been affected by cancer, so this game holds a special place in my heart. It is the game I look forward to the most each season and feel honored to represent the Minnesota Vikings in helping bringing awareness.

Did You Know…

Did you know that Viktor the Viking was sporting a custom-made jersey that displayed names of those affected by cancer for our Crucial Catch game? This was special as we were able to remember those that may not still be with us on this day of raising awareness.

It is amazing that we can use the platform of the NFL to change the lives of people around us. Many people are affected by cancer each day, and for us to center a whole game around them is very inspiring. I'm proud to be a part of an organization that makes a difference in people's lives.
