Vikings Acquire QB Joshua Dobbs via Trade with Cardinals

EAGAN, Minn. – The Vikings are adding to their quarterbacks room.

Minnesota is trading for Cardinals QB Josh Dobbs, the team announced Tuesday ahead of the 3 p.m. (CT) NFL trade deadline. The Vikings sent a 2024 sixth-round pick to the Cardinals in exchange for Dobbs and a conditional 2024 seventh-round pick.

Through eight starts for Arizona this season, Dobbs went 167-of-266 passing for 1,569 yards, eight touchdowns and five interceptions. He totaled an 81.2 passer rating for the Cardinals.

The move comes after Kirk Cousins suffered a torn Achilles tendon, an injury that will sideline him for the remainder of the season, at Green Bay Sunday.

Vikings backup QB Nick Mullens landed on Injured Reserve Oct. 11 with a back injury. The soonest Mullens could be activated would be Week 10, though Vikings Head Coach Kevin O'Connell did not confirm whether or not he would be fully healthy at that point.

The Vikings also have rookie QB Jaren Hall, whom O'Connell has expressed confidence in, and they recently returned Sean Mannion to the practice squad.

O'Connell has not yet designated who will serve as Minnesota's starting quarterback for Week 9 at Atlanta.

Dobbs landed in Arizona in August via trade with Cleveland on the day the Cardinals were concluding joint practices with the Vikings.

Minnesota hosted Arizona in the teams' third preseason game two days later, but Dobbs did not take any snaps in that contest.

He, however, started, Arizona's first eight games of 2023.

A native of Alpharetta, Georgia, Dobbs was a standout at the University of Tennessee, where he majored in aerospace engineering. He ranks fifth in program history with 7,138 career passing yards and 53 touchdowns and fourth with 614 pass completions. He helped the Volunteers win three Bowl games as a starting quarterback.

Dobbs was drafted in the fourth round of the 2017 NFL Draft by the Pittsburgh Steelers, whom he played for in 2017 and 2018. He was traded to the Jaguars in Week 1 of the 2019 season, then had a second stint with the Steelers in 2020. He spent time with the Lions, Browns and Titans in 2022 before rejoining Cleveland in the spring being acquired by Arizona via trade on Aug. 24.

Over 16 career games played (10 starts), Dobbs is 217-of-351 passing for 2,025 yards, 10 touchdowns and eight interceptions with a passer rating of 77.6.

Minnesota placed Cousins on Injured Reserve Tuesday.
