EAGAN, Minn. — The Vikings have traded J.J. McCarthy to the New York Giants, the team announced Monday.
Minnesota received a 2027 fifth-round pick from New York, which lost starting QB Jaxson Dart for the season in Week 2. The deal is pending McCarthy passing a physical exam.
The Vikings drafted McCarthy 10th overall out of Michigan in 2024, where he was coached by Jim Harbaugh, the current Chargers head coach and brother of Giants Head Coach John Harbaugh.
After spending the entirety of his rookie campaign on Injured Reserve with a knee injury suffered in the Vikings first preseason game, McCarthy made his NFL debut in Week 1 of the 2025 campaign. He finished the Monday Night Football outing 13-of-20 passing for 143 yards, two passing touchdowns and a rushing score — all in the fourth quarter — with one interception. McCarthy earned NFC Offensive Player of the Week for helping lead Minnesota to a comeback win.
McCarthy suffered a high ankle sprain against the Falcons in Week 2 and missed five games, returning for a Week 9 divisional matchup against Detroit.
He finished the 2025 season having started 10 games, going 6-4 in those contests. McCarthy finished the season 140-of-243 passing for 1,632 yards, 11 touchdowns and 12 interceptions. His passer rating was 72.6.
During the 2026 offseason workouts and training camp, McCarthy competed with free agent addition Kyler Murray for Minnesota's starting QB spot. The Vikings officially named Murray the starter on Aug. 11.
Murray started in Week 1 but left the game in concussion protocol after 11 snaps. He was replaced by veteran Carson Wentz, who started Week 2 before passing the reins back to Murray in Week 3.
Minnesota has opened the season 3-0 after closing 2025 with a 5-0 mark.
