2023 NFL Draft Prospects for Vikings: Wide Receivers & Tight Ends

In the leadup to the 2023 NFL Draft, Vikings.com is taking a look at prospects who have garnered a range of attention from national outlets. The series will include rankings by those national outlets, stats and background information for multiple prospects.

Vikings status at wide receiver

For the first time since 2014, Adam Thielen will not be part of the Vikings 53-man roster.

The Vikings parted ways in free agency with Thielen, who has since signed with the Panthers.

Justin Jefferson remains the Vikings No. 1 receiver, no questions asked, and K.J. Osborn likely will vie for that No. 2 spot. But that's not to say Minnesota won't bring in other names who could compete, as well.

Jefferson continues to impress as he enters Year 4. He topped the single-season franchise records for receptions (set by Cris Carter) and yards (set by Randy Moss) in the same game, a 27-24 win over the Giants on Dec. 24, Minnesota's 15th game of the 2022 season. Jefferson was targeted 184 times on the way to setting a franchise record with 10 games in one season with at least 100 receiving yards.

The Vikings used 11 personnel (one running back, one tight end and three receivers) more than 70 percent of the time last season, continuing increased opportunities for Osborn in his third pro season. Osborn finished with a career-high 60 receptions for 650 yards and five scores on 90 targets.

In addition to Jefferson and Osborn, Minnesota's current receivers group includes Trishton Jackson, Jalen Nailor, Blake Proehl, Jalen Reagor and free-agency addition Brandon Powell, who played in Los Angeles for Vikings Head Coach Kevin O'Connell.

Vikings status at tight end

The Vikings have five tight ends under contract for 2023, including T.J. Hockenson, who was acquired via trade with the Lions last season, and free agent addition Josh Oliver, regarded as one of the NFL's best blocking tight ends. There are a couple of ways Oliver is expected to help the passing game.

Hockenson finished the 2022 campaign with career highs in catches (86), yards (914) and touchdowns (6) in his time with Detroit and Minnesota, earning himself a second career Pro Bowl nod. He provided another big target for Cousins, catching at least five passes in eight of his 11 games as a Viking, including Minnesota's playoff game.

The Vikings also have Johnny Mundt, who is entering his second season with Minnesota but has plenty familiarity with O'Connell's system after playing for the coach in Los Angeles. While largely used in a blocking capacity, Mundt showed off his pass-catching skills more than ever before, recording career highs of 19 receptions and 140 yards last season. He also caught his first NFL touchdown.

Ben Ellefson, who has landed on Injured Reserve in each of the past two seasons, and second-year tight end Nick Muse, whom the Vikings signed to a Reserve/Futures contract in January, round out the group.
