Vikings Agree to Terms with Alexander Mattison to Keep RB in Purple

EAGAN, Minn. – Alexander Mattison is remaining a Viking.

Minnesota agreed to terms with the running back early in the 2023 New League Year, the team announced Thursday morning.

Originally a third-round draft pick in 2019, Mattison is entering his fifth season with the Vikings. He played all 17 games in 2022, totaling 74 rushes for 283 yards and a career-high five rushing touchdowns. He also added 15 catches for 91 yards and a touchdown through the air.

In four seasons with Minnesota, Mattison has 404 carries for 1,670 yards and 11 rushing touchdowns, and 70 catches for 526 receiving yards and three touchdowns.

Mattison, who will turn 25 in June, has primarily served as the backup to Vikings running back Dalvin Cook. He is part of a position group in Minnesota that also includes Kene Nwangwu and 2022 rookie Ty Chandler.

Mattison is among multiple players who were scheduled to become free agents that the Vikings are returning, including center Garrett Bradbury, kicker Greg Joseph, long snapper Andrew DePaola, tight end Ben Ellefson and outside linebacker Kenny Willekes.
