After Further Review: Bradford's Trio of Deep Completions

After Further Review is a deeper look at plays or stats after Vikings games…

The Vikings entered Sunday's game against the Jaguars with four pass plays of more than 40 yards on the season, but were able to connect for three in Jacksonville.

All three substantial gains occurred in the first half, with Minnesota getting gains of 44 yards on a pass from Sam Bradford to Kyle Rudolph on the first play of the game and 41 yards to Adam Thielen to start their second offensive series.

Bradford also connected with Stefon Diggs deep down the middle for a gain of 45 in the second quarter.

Here's a look at those three plays:

Bradford drops back to the 18 and has time and space to survey his options, but the Jaguars, who only rushed their front four defenders, have Vikings receivers covered. He begins moving up in the pocket after three seconds and spots Rudolph sneaking away from safety Johnathan Cyprien.

Center Nick Easton blocks Abry Jones to the right and into Malik Jackson long enough to delay Jackson.

The Vikings protect the back side of the play with Jerick McKinnon chipping to help T.J. Clemmings with defensive end Tyson Alualu. Alex Boone also steps in on Alualu as the play is extended, allowing Bradford to step to the 23-yard line and launch the ball on the run as Rudolph breaks to the outside.

Rudolph catches the ball at the Minnesota 46 with enough of a gap to make it to the Jacksonville 44 before Cyprien begins tackling him. Rudolph has enough strength to drag Cyprien to the 31 for the big gain.

With a 3-0 lead and great starting field position, the Vikings like the look of Thielen matched up against single coverage by Prince Amukamara on the left side of the formation. They have Cordarrelle Patterson to Thielen's right, and Diggs inside of Patterson in the slot.

Bradford is in the shotgun formation and flanked by Matt Asiata, who plays a significant part in the success of the play by stonewalling a blitz by linebacker Telvin Smith.

Safety Tashaun Gipson is providing help with the middle-of-the-field routes by Patterson and Diggs, so Bradford knows he's got room to get the ball to Thielen down the sideline before Gipson can help.

Thielen gets impressive separation from Amukamara and smoothly tracks down the ball.

Q2, 4:49 left; Second-and-9 at the Minnesota 41

The Vikings have Diggs in the slot to Bradford's left with Patterson to the left of Diggs and Thielen on the outside.

This time, however, instead of matching corner Jalen Ramsey against Diggs like the Jaguars did on the play to Thielen, they have a linebacker passing off coverage to Gipson.

Bradford executes a play-action to McKinnon and receives great protection from the line against a four-man rush.

Two plays after losing a matchup with Yannick Ngakoue, Clemmings is effective in a one-on-one battle against the defensive end on Bradford's blindside. Easton also is effective in a one-on-one, and the Vikings double team the other two rushing defenders, allowing Diggs to zoom past the linebackers and get inside leverage on Gipson.

Bradford has plenty of space in the middle of the field, and Diggs hauls in the pass with a diving catch.
