2016 Vikings Schedule Icebreakers: 2 Thursday Games Wrap 3rd Quarter

The Vikings announced their **regular season schedule*** *Thursday.

We're breaking it down into groups of four games to break the ice on Minnesota's opponents in the 2016 season.

The third grouping of games includes the Vikings alternating between road trips and home games. Minnesota will visit Washington in Week 10 before hosting Arizona. The Vikings then will start everyone's Thanksgiving buffet of football by visiting the Lions for the tradition enjoyed by Detroit. Minnesota will round out its third quarter of the season by hosting Dallas on Thursday Night Football, one of three national TV broadcasts scheduled to highlight the brand new stadium this season.

Icebreakers:The Vikings have won four of their past five matchups with Washington and will look to grab a third consecutive victory over the NFC East team. … After going 3-13 and 4-12 in 2013 and 2014, respectively, Washington boasted a 9-7 record in 2015 and made its first playoff appearance since 2012. … This year likely will mark Redskins QB Kirk Cousins' first game against the Vikings. In 2015, Cousins started all 16 games and completed 379 of 543 passes for 4,166 yards and 29 touchdowns. Cousins finished the season with a passer rating of 101.6. … Redskins TE Jordan Reed led the team with 952 receiving yards and 11 touchdowns in his third season with Washington. … In 2015, the Redskins defense ranked 26th in rushing yards allowed and 31st in passing yards allowed per game. … In the teams' last meeting on Nov. 2, 2014, Vikings QB Teddy Bridgewater threw for 268 yards and one touchdown. For the Redskins, RB Alfred Morris led the team with 92 rushing yards. Morris departed for Dallas in free agency this offseason. Vikings RB Adrian Peterson is 3-2 against the Redskins and has been limited to an average of 51 yards per game. In 2011, Peterson tore his ACL in the Vikings 33-26 win over Washington. … Vikings CB Terence Newman has played the Redskins 18 times over his career and has nine interceptions against them, more than any other opponent.

Icebreakers:Prior to last season's loss, the Vikings had won three in a row against the Cardinals. … Arizona finished with the best offense in the NFL in terms of yards per game as the Cardinals went 13-3 and won the NFC West for the first time since 2009. … Arizona quarterback Carson Palmer threw for career highs of 4,671 yards and 35 touchdowns. … The Vikings fell just short last season as quarterback Teddy Bridgewater threw for a career-best 335 yards against a stingy Arizona defense. … Arizona rookie running back David Johnson rushed for 581 yards and eight touchdowns in 2015. … Wide receiver Larry Fitzgerald led Arizona in receptions (109), yards (1,215) and touchdowns (nine). … Cardinals cornerback Tyrann Mathieu and safety Rashad Johnson, who signed with the Titans this offseason, tied for the team lead with five interceptions apiece.

The number one overall pick of 2009 has a career passer rating of 90.6 against Minnesota. In each of the six seasons (2009, 2011-15) that Stafford has played against the Vikings, the winner of the first game has swept the season slate in all but 2013. … The Lions ground game is likely to be led by second year multi-faceted threat Ameer Abdullah, who led Detroit with 143 carries for 597 yards. Icebreakers:Although the Vikings lost their last meeting against Dallas, they have had a recent run of success against the Cowboys by winning seven of the previous nine contests. … Dallas should benefit from the return of quarterback Tony Romo, who played in just four games in 2015 due to injuries. Romo is Dallas' all-time leader with 34,154 passing yards and has thrown for 4,000-plus yards in a season four times. … Cowboys wide receiver Dez Bryant was also limited by injuries in 2015. He played in just nine games, catching 31 passes for 401 yards and three touchdowns. ... Cowboys Head Coach Jason Garrett is in his sixth full season in charge and is 45-43 with Dallas. … Vikings cornerback Terence Newman was the fifth overall pick by Dallas in the 2003 NFL Draft. Newman recorded 32 interceptions in nine seasons with the Cowboys.
