School is out for summer, but the results of what started as a history lesson have continued this week.

After a **campaign by students to rename** Alexander Ramsey Middle School began in August 2016, the Minneapolis Board of Education voted on Tuesday night to rename it Justice Page Middle School, Minneapolis Public Schools announced.

Justice Page Principal Erin Rathke said in a press release that she is very proud of her students and impressed by the way her staff supported them.

"I am deeply inspired by their example," Rathke said. "Not only did these kids bring our school community together around an important cause, they did so in a respectful, productive way. From the beginning, this was about making their voices heard — and tonight shows the power of their work."

When students studied Ramsey's career as the first governor of the Minnesota Territory and second governor of the state, they also learned of his policies toward indigenous people. The students wanted a namesake that would be more welcoming for all students and organized meetings to plan their renaming campaign.

Several options were considered before the new name was selected. It is in honor of Vikings Hall of Fame defensive tackle and retired Minnesota Supreme Court Justice Alan Page, who was the first African American Justice in Minnesota's history and is a continued supporter of educational opportunities.

Page and his wife, Diane, launched the Page Education Foundation in 1988 when Page was enshrined into the Pro Football Hall of Fame. Since then, the Page Education Foundation has provided more than $12 million in scholarships to more than 6,000 students.
