Ryan Ficken enters his 13th season with the Vikings in 2019 and will return as the club’s Assistant Special Teams coach for the 7th season. Previously, Ficken worked with the Vikings WRs from 2009-12.
The 2018 Vikings were forced to change specialists in-season when veteran Dan Bailey came on to handle the kicking duties starting in the 3rd week of the season. Matt Wile took over the punting job in the week of the 2018 opener and turned in the 2nd-best net punting average in team history (41.5 yards), finishing .3 behind a record that has stood since 1964. Veteran punt return man Marcus Sherels averaged 12.0 yards per return for the season and notched a 116-yard day vs. Miami (12/16), the 2nd-best day in team history behind his own 119-yard record. His 6 returns of 20+ yards tied for 2nd in the NFL in 2018 and his 12.0 avg. was 6th-best in the league.
