Robert Rodriguez returns for his 5th season with the Vikings in 2019, serving as the team’s Assistant Defensive Line coach. Rodriguez will again work closely with veteran defensive line coach Andre Patterson in their 5th season together with the Vikings.
The 2018 Vikings ranked #4 in NFL total defense and #4 in scoring defense, the 3rd straight season finishing in the top 5 of both categories. The team led the NFL in 3rd-down defense for the 2nd straight season, limiting teams to 30.5% conversions on 3rd down. The Vikings talented defensive line played a key part in the perfomance. The unit was led by DE Danielle Hunter, whose 14.5 sacks was a team-high and he earned his 1st career Pro Bowl berth and was named 2nd-Team AP All-Pro. Hunter’s breakout season spurred a defense that recorded 50 sacks, the most under Zimmer and tied for the 3rd-most in team history. The defense set a franchise record with 10 sacks vs. Detroit (11/4) and followed up later in the season with 9 sacks against Miami (12/16).
