Paul Guenther

Senior Defensive Assistant

Paul Guenther will serve as the Vikings Senior Defensive Assistant in his 1st season with the Vikings and 19th in the NFL in 2021. Guenther served the previous seven seasons as Defensive Coordinator with Cincinnati (2014-17) and the Oakland/Las Vegas Raiders (2018-20).

In his role with the Vikings, Guenther again joins Mike Zimmer's coaching staff and will work on defensive packages with his former coordinator for Cincinnati.

In 2020, the Las Vegas defensive unit finished 16th in red zone defense and 25th in total defense. DE Maxx Crosby led the team in sacks for the 2nd straight season. In the secondary, S Jeff Heath was AFC Defensive Player of the Week after a 2-INT day in a Week 10 win over Denver. CB Trayvon Mullen started every game in just his 2nd year, with career-highs in tackles (62), INTs (2) and passes defensed (14).

In 2019, the Raiders allowed just 98.1 rushing yards per game, the 7th-best mark in team history. That average also ranked 8th in the NFL a 22-spot improvement from the team's finish in 2018 and the club's highest since 2002. The defense had 19 more sacks than in 2018 while leading the league in rookie sacks with a total of 14.5 on the year. The 14.5 sacks by Raiders rookies ranks as 2nd-most in club history. Leading in the sack category was DE Maxx Crosby, whose 10.0 sacks on the year finished as the 2nd-most by a rookie in team history behind only DE Greg Townsend's 10.5 in 1983. Crosby ranked 2nd in the NFL among all rookies.
