Turner Talks QBs in Advance of Camp

Voice of the Vikings Paul Allen hosts a radio show on KFAN FM 100.3, and on Monday PA had the man who will have a large voice in deciding the Vikings quarterback competition on as a guest. What Vikings Offensive Coordinator Norv Turner said about the Vikings quarterback situation and about each of the three passers specifically made a few waves in what is one of the rare slow times of the NFL news cycle.

"We've got a really, really good group," Turner said, after explaining earlier that the coaching staff is anxious to get the quarterbacks into training camp to see "where they are at" and "how much they've retained" from the offseason program.

By Turner's account, all three of the Vikings quarterbacks – Teddy Bridgewater, Matt Cassel and Christian Ponder – were solid during the offseason program. This sets the stage for what will be a legitimate quarterback competition during training camp.

Turner has plenty of experience with these sorts of things, and it's that experience that will help shape this competition during practices in Mankato.

"We get between 120 to 140 snaps during a training camp day and that is plenty enough time for all the guys to work a rotation and give them bigger reps and evaluate them," Turner explained.

So where does the competition stand entering training camp? Here is a brief comment on each quarterback from Turner's interview with PA on Monday.

Teddy Bridgewater: "Teddy's been really, really impressive and a lot further along than I expected him to be."

A few weeks back at the Vikings annual charity golf tournament, Turner also said this about his rookie quarterback: "I think he's saying all the right things. He's really a competitor. I think he has his sights set on playing and playing well as soon as he can, so that's what you want."

Matt Cassel:"I think that Matt Cassel has had an outstanding spring and is getting himself ready to really have a good year."

Christian Ponder"Christian Ponder, I know people like to beat up on him, but I've been impressed with Christian. With his physical ability and the way he's worked and the progress he's made. He's eliminating a lot of the negative plays."
