Postgame Quotes: Vikings-Bills

MINNESOTA VIKINGS HEAD COACH MIKE ZIMMER

Opening Statement:We've still got a lot of work to do. My expectation for this game is a lot higher than that so we've got to get back to work. Thought the special teams played well tonight. We flipped the field position quite a few times. Did a good job covering, did a good job with the kicks. I didn't feel like we covered well enough, defensively. Especially early in the ball game, we gave up too many easy catches. Then offensively, the two sacks were disappointing but we had only three penalties tonight and they had ten, so questions.

Q: What did you think of Dalvin Cook's day?

A: You know, I thought it was good. He did some good things and I thought he ran behind his pads well for a first time out. Did a nice job and he cut the ball on a screen but unfortunately we had a penalty on the one but I'm sure he feels like he could have done more and he will in the future?

Q: How did you feel about Case Keenum's performance? It looked pretty strong out there.

A: Fine.

Q: What was the most disappointing part to you about this night? You said you had higher expectations. What was the one thing that stuck out to you?

A: Well, I expected us to go out and take the ball and go out down and score and we didn't do that. You know, we had about a six-play drive or something. You know, the sack. Stopped the first one. And then, we had a couple pressures tonight where we ran up the field and it was a run. You know, we allowed runs to occur. That's an easily correctable thing that we'll get corrected. We've got to challenge receivers [to be] a lot better. Catch a five yard throw, or a curl, and we're three yards off the guy – it's not good.

Q: How did you feel about Stacy Coley? He obviously had some nice catches out there tonight.

A: Good.

Q: Bishop [Sankey], we saw him on crutches. What is the initial prognosis?

A: Well, he hurt his knee so we'll see what happens when he gets an MRI.

Q: Eric Wilson seemed to be around the ball a lot tonight. What did you see form Eric Wilson?

A: You know, it's really hard for me to say. I was trying to look at the defensive line and the secondary more so, so I cant give you an honest opinion.

Q: Did you end up calling plays or did George [Edwards] end up calling defensive plays?

A: Does it matter?

Q: You're evaluating where this offense was, was the plan for them to do three series or had you seen enough at that point to make the call?

A: Yeah, it was a number of plays and we were going to go.

Q: Any concerns about the two sacks that were given up on [Sam] Bradford?

A: No.

Q: Do you have any update on where Trae Waynes is at with that shoulder injury?

A: Just a sore shoulder, I guess. I don't know.

Q: Oh, so it's not that bad? You're not concerned about that moving forward?

A: No.

MINNESOTA VIKINGS QUARTERBACK SAM BRADFORD

Q: How'd you feel today and what went through for you guys in those series?

A: Obviously, it was just good to get back out there and play real football again, and kind of feel the speed of the game. Like I said earlier this week, our goal is to come out and score points, which is something that we didn't do. We're just going to have to go back and look at where things kind of broke down for us, how we can get better, and just keep ourselves out there.

Q: What did you see that went wrong out there in those three series?

A: I think the first one ended in a sack, I think we took a sack on another one, and then a penalty; 2nd and 20 – Typical things that get you behind the chain. It's hard to make up for some of those, and we just have to do a better job of keeping ourselves in a good position, keep ourselves ahead of the chains where we can mix in the run, the pass and stay balanced.

Q: Would you say it's not really fair to judge the line until you get [Riley] Reiff back there – He hadn't been with you guys?

A: Yeah, I think tonight was a pretty small sample size. I don't know how many plays we played, but like I said, obviously, our goal was to come out, move the ball and score points; We didn't score points tonight, obviously, that's a little bit frustrating.

Q: Everyone knows about Dalvin [Cook] as a runner, maybe some fans may not know how good of a pass receiver he is. What do you think of his pass receiving ability?

A: It's been tremendous throughout camp, and I think it's something that we noticed pretty early on during OTAs. He's continued to show it throughout this camp, and I think he's going to be a valuable asset; Not only in the run game, but I think we're going to be able to utilize him in the pass game. You saw one time tonight we moved him out wide in an empty set, also, just trying to get him the ball from the backfield in some five-man protection stuff. I think Dalvin, given that he has the ability to be such a great runner but can also do things for us in the pass game, it just makes it where we can use him in a lot of different ways.

Q: Did you want to go back out there after the third series? Were you guys, not content necessarily? When they're telling you you're done, are you reacting saying no put us back out there?

A: Like I said I think our goal is to come out tonight, move the football and score points, and we didn't do that. I think, obviously, given another shot we would have liked to go back out there and try to get something going because I felt like we never got into a rhythm tonight.

Q: Good performance there, catching the ball, three catches, like 67 yards?

A: It was great, I felt I could have did more, but knew my opportunity was at hand and I feel like I executed.

Q: Take us through that sideline play, the scramble, got the knee down, held onto the ball?

A; Oh yeah, uh, I had a slant route and the quarterback started scrambling to my side so I just reversed field and just ran it to the sideline. The quarterback made a good play, I feel like I made a good play.

Q: What was the emotion of the game?

A: It was good, I feel like all around, we did good as a group. For me to just, keep talking to us on the sideline and just telling us, "just keep focused, keep making plays and just have fun out there". So I feel like the atmosphere around was just awesome.

Q: Alternating with Rodney on punt returns, kick returns, how do you think you did?

A: I feel like I did good, I feel like I made a couple guys miss, with my opportunities, like I said, with my opportunities, when I was back there so I feel like I did great.

Q: In terms of just the game tonight, Coach (Zimmer) came out a few days ago and said that you and Rodney were kind of head among the young receivers and you even built on that. How do you feel about your prospects after such a strong game?

A: I mean, like we said, every day we're just out there, just competing, just having fun, just learning from the older guys and just letting them lead by example and then we just follow. So I feel like we're just doing a great job as a unit and just competing and having fun.

MINNESOTA VIKINGS RUNNING BACK DALVIN COOK

Q: What do you make of your first pre-season game and how do you think it went? They were using you a lot in the first couple series.

A: Pretty solid, it was a good first start to the preseason. I feel like, you know, it was a good start and everything was smooth. We still got some stuff to work on, but that's just part of the process.

Q: What did you learn going up against the starting defense, a starting NFL defense, I know you've done it in practice but in an actual pre-season game?

A: Football is football at the end of the day, you got to prepare and go out there and approach the game like you approach practice. Football is football and you just got to go out there and have fun, that's what I do man, I go out there, enjoy myself, have fun and you know, try to help my team win football games.

Q: What was it like just getting, you know, the first carry and all that, the fans, your first NFL game, what was that like?

A: It was definitely fun. Getting that first carry, getting that out the way, because you know, once you get that out the way, you know, you can really get going and play football once you get that first carry out the way. So, you know, it was fun getting that first carry and it was good.

Q: Even though you didn't, I guess, get any TD's, you feel pretty good? A good birthday gift, you know, suiting up for your first NFL game?

A: Yeah, no doubt, we got a W. We won, that's the most important part, we got a W, we got a win. So, at the end of the day, that's what it's all about, winning. So you know, we got a W, so that's the best birthday gift I could have right there.

Q: With Riley (Reiff) coming back, and all this stuff, how much are you looking forward to getting your offensive line all intact and ready?

A: As each week goes, we're going to get better and better. We just can't take steps backward, we got to keep getting better, better and better every week. We got a confident group, a confident running scheme, and we going to keep getting better every week, and we just going to keep attacking the defense and do what we do as an offense.

Q: What happened with the interception?

A: Just threw it right to the guy, obviously. I should have just threw it out of bounds and that was my intention, I just threw it right to him.

Q: Still, it's a victory. I think Mike Zimmer's like 13-1 in the preseason. It just seems like you guys always find ways to pull out these preseason games.

A: Yeah, you know, that's the point of the games to get wins so we're doing that. That's good.

Q: First time you guys have had live action in quite some time. What were your takeaways for that? What was it like for you to get back out there?

A: I think I needed to calm down a little bit. I think I was a little antsy at first, excited. Again, it was the first time getting on the field in two years but again, it wasn't as clean as I would have liked so I'm just going to go watch film and try and get better from it.

Q: What did you think of some of the plays from the young receivers?

A: They were out there making plays. You know, Rodney Adams was going in traffic and getting hit but he was making plays and Stacy [Coley], same thing. I thought the guys, young guys, did really well.
