Lunch Break, July 29: Praise For Barr, Bridgewater Staying 'Under The Radar'

Anthony Barr: Vikings coach heaps praise on rookie linebacker

It's hard to miss first round pick Anthony Barr in any setting and the practice fields at Minnesota State are no different. The six-feet-five rookie linebacker has been turning heads the first few days of full pads at the Vikings practices. Barr has been a standout early in camp with his physical style of play.

Below is an excerpt from Pioneer Press's Vikings beat reporter Brian Murphy Tuesday story on Barr:

*At 6-feet-5, rookie linebacker Anthony Barr threatens to ram the ceiling in most rooms, but Vikings coach Mike Zimmer is unwilling to place a figurative one over his potential. *

*"My expectations of him are probably higher than for anybody else," Zimmer said Monday. "I've seen great things out of him." *

*The rangy, 255-pound defender already has absorbed plenty of Minnesota's new defensive scheme. *

Barr, the first draft pick of Mike Zimmer's regime, will have plenty of hype and intrigue when he lines up for the first time during for the Vikings in the preseason game on the U of M campus on August 8.

1500 ESPN Columnist/Radio Host Judd Zulgad recently profiled Vikings 2014 first round selection quarterback Teddy Bridgewater, touching on his personality and mindset as he goes through this first NFL training camp.

Zulgad refers to Bridgewater as the 'anti-Manziel' and goes on to explain his quiet, yet extremely focused, mentality. Bridgewater's rookie duties are also explained in the article:

Teddy Bridgewater, meanwhile, has done everything in his power to maintain a low profile and hasn't been photographed once with an alcoholic beverage near him. But Bridgewater might have left himself open for a photo op at one point Friday when he did have a drink in hand, although it was not of the alcoholic variety.

"He actually got me a Gatorade today, which I was really thankful for," veteran quarterback Matt Cassel said of his rookie teammate.

Bridgewater, who was selected 32nd overall in the past May's NFL Draft, has the opportunity to learn from the veteran Cassel as Vikings training camp gets into full swing here in Mankato.
