Final Thoughts: Vikings vs. Jets

In every NFL matchup, there are a seemingly endless amount of angles to analyze. It's hard to get to them all during the week of practice, and I'm sure there were some that slipped through the cracks despite all of the Vikings vs.  Jets preview content we provided on vikings.com this week.

With kickoff fast approaching, here are a few final thoughts on today's Vikings-Jets contest.

How to Take in Today's Game Game Time: 12:00 p.m. CT TV:CBSRadio:Vikings Radio Network; KFAN-FM 100.3/KTCN-AM 1130Mobile:NFL Mobile (exclusively on Verizon)

Expect to see a lot of HarvinPercy Harvin may be relatively new to the Jets offense, but they've wasted no time in experimenting with how to use the dynamic playmaker. Harvin, as he did for the Vikings from 2009-12, lines up everywhere for the Jets.  They line him up out wide and in the slot, they motion and shift with him, they line him up in the backfield, they run between the tackles and they run outside with him.

The Jets have targeted Harvin 35 times in the passing game and he's come down with 19 receptions for 182 yards. Harvin also has 17 rushing attempts for 96 yards. Of his 17 rushing attempts, nine have come with him in the backfield lined up as a running back and eight have come with him lined up elsewhere.

On top of all that, the Jets will use Harvin as their primary kickoff returner – he has 14 kickoff returns for 334 yards (23.9 average) as a member of the Jets.

Matchup of the day: Everson Griffen vs. D'Brickashaw FergusonThe NFL is a big matchup league, and perhaps the best matchup on the field today will be Vikings DE Everson Griffen against Jets LT D'Brickashaw Ferguson. Griffen is in the midst of a career season with 11.0 sacks, while Ferguson, who stands at 6-6, 310 pounds, is a three-time Pro Bowler capable of neutralizing the League's best pass rushers.

Decker's homecomingToday marks a homecoming for Jets WR Eric Decker. The Cold Spring, Minn. native played collegiately at the University of Minnesota and is one of the best wide receivers in program history. Decker set Gopher records with 227 receptions and 3,119 receiving yards. In 2008 as a junior, he posted a Gophers-record 84 receptions for 1,074 yards (12.8 avg.), earning All-America honorable mention honors and Big 10 First-Team All-Conference recognition. Decker was teammates at Minnesota with Vikings defensive back Marcus Sherels.

Temperature no problem, precipitation might beThe forecast calls for temperatures to hover around the 30-degree mark, a much better outlook than last week when the wind chill made it feel sub-zero. The forecast also calls for a chance for precipitation around 1:00pm, though, so if the temperature is below freezing when the precipitation strikes it could make for some interesting conditions.
