BIOGRAPHY

Entering his 6th season with the Vikings in 2018, Jeff Howard will assist the coaching staff with preparation and have a hands-on role on the defensive side of the ball, specifically helping the LB corps.

The 2017 Vikings 13-3 regular-season record was the 2nd best in the history of the franchise (15-1, 1998). The Minnesota Vikings defense led the NFL in yards per game allowed (275.9) for the 1st time since 1993 and also led the league allowing 15.8 points per game in the regular season. The Vikings defense limited opponents to 83.6 rushing yards per game (2nd in the NFL) and 3.6 yards per rush (5th in the NFL). Minnesota held opponents to 192.4 passing yards per game, 2nd in the NFL, making them the only defense in the NFL to rank in the top 3 in both rushing yards per game and passing yards per game. The defense also held opponents to a 25.2% (51/202) 3rd-down conversion rate, the best mark in the NFL.

The 2016 Vikings climbed to #3 in the NFL in total defense, the highest ranking since 1993, and ranked #5 in scoring defense, allowing 18.7 points per game. The club finished with an 8-8 mark. Minnesota ranked tied for 4th in the NFL with 41.0 sacks on the season and tied for 7th in the NFL with 27 takeaways.

The Vikings defense in 2015 continued to improve in every statistical category, helping Minnesota to its 1st playoff berth since 2012. Howard aided the Viking defense, which allowed the 5th-fewest point (18.9 ppg) during the 2015 regular season and forced 22 turnovers, jumping from 25th in the league in turnovers in 2014 to 19th in 2015. .

During the 2014 season, the Vikings defense improved from 32nd in points per game in 2013 to 13th in points per game in 2014. Minnesota also improved its passing yards per game from 31st in the league in 2013 to 7th in 2014. From 2013 to 2014, the Vikings allowed 113 fewer points, the largest scoring defense improvement in the NFL.

Howard transitioned from his on-field playing days at Eastern New Mexico, where he earned All-American honors for his play and academics, to coaching at Odessa Permian HS in Odessa, TX. Howard was on staff from 2007-10, during which he assisted the secondary and LBs before becoming the defensive coordinator in 2009-10. Howard was on the Texas Tech staff from 2011-12, serving in the defensive quality control role in 2011 and coaching the safety position in 2012.

Howard played LB for Eastern New Mexico from 2001-04 and was a 4-time Academic All-Lone Star Conference member. Howard earned 1st Team All-Lone Star Conference honors as a LB in 2003-04 while capping his career by being named a 2004 AFCA Division II All-American and graduating Cum Laude with degree in biology and chemistry. Howard had his jersey retired by Eastern New Mexico in 2006 and entered ENMU Hall of Honor in 2011.
