Posted Jul 23, 2009

The Minnesota Vikings have signed 2009 3rd-round draft pick CB Asher Allen, it was announced today. Terms of the contract were not disclosed.

Allen, the 86th overall pick in this year’s draft, started 24 of the 39 games he played in at the University of Georgia before declaring for the NFL Draft following his junior season. He started all 13 games as a strong-side cornerback in 2008, finishing with 53 tackles, 7 pass breakups and 4.5 tackles for loss, and was a finalist for the Lott Trophy in 2008 despite playing with a broken hand through part of the season.

In addition to his play on defense, Allen closed out his college career as one of the elite kick returners in Georgia’s history, ranking third all-time with 1,110 yards on 47 kickoff returns for a 23.6-yard average, which ranked fourth in school history.

Allen is the 3rd of the Vikings 5-member 2009 draft class to sign with the team, joining 5th-round LB Jasper Brinkley and 7th-round S Jamarca Sanford.
