Vikings and Rams Battled Throughout 1970s Postseasons

Posted Oct 10, 2009

The Vikings and Los Angeles Rams had one of the bitterest rivalries of the 1970s when both teams rocked back and forth with the Dallas Cowboys as the dominant teams of the NFC. From 1969-79, the Vikings or Rams played in the NFL/NFC Championship Game 8 times - including the 1974 and 1976 NFC title games when the squads faced off against each other. Over a 10-season span from 1969-1978, the Vikings and Rams met in the playoffs 5 times with Minnesota winning 4 of those contests. On 12/27/69, the Vikings hosted the 1st-ever playoff game at Met Stadium when the visiting Rams came for the NFL Western Conference title game. The Vikings won that 1st home playoff game, using the momentum from the 23-20 win over the Rams to defeat the Cleveland Browns at the Met a week later and advance to Super Bowl IV against Kansas City.

The 1969 Western Conference title game was a back-and-forth affair that saw the Vikings battle back from a 17-7 halftime deficit and trail 20-14 in the 4th quarter before Joe Kapp rumbled in for a 2-yard TD to make it 21-20 in favor of the Vikings. Future Hall of Famer Carl Eller sealed the deal when he sacked Rams QB Roman Gabriel for a safety, giving Minnesota the final 23-20 margin.

The rivalry only heated up from that initial 1969 meeting. The teams were familiar with each other from the early days of the Vikings franchise when they were Western Conference foes, playing twice yearly from 1961-66. From 1961-79, the teams met in the regular season and playoffs 28 times in the 19-season span. In 1978, the squads met in the NFC Divisional Playoffs, a game the Rams won 34-10 before falling to Dallas in the NFC title game. A year later, in 1979, the Rams topped Tampa Bay to advance to the Super Bowl against Pittsburgh. The Vikings and Rams then started seeing each other less frequently in the postseason, about once a decade. The 1988 Vikings topped the visiting Rams at the Metrodome in the NFC’s 1st Round Playoffs 28-17 and in 1999 the Vikings traveled to St. Louis to meet the Rams in the NFC Divisional Playoffs, a 49-37 loss to the eventual Super Bowl champions.
