The Vikings continue to move forward on plans for the team’s upcoming two seasons at the University of Minnesota. After signing a use agreement in May 2013, Vikings and University officials have spent several months collaborating with Mortenson Construction regarding the needs – and the costs associated with those needs – to make TCF Bank Stadium NFL-ready. Today, the University’s Board of Regents heard the complete list of stadium modifications - which will come with an approximate $6.6 million price tag and will be covered by the $975 million new stadium budget - and authorized University personnel to sign the agreement with Mortenson Construction so work can begin in early March.
“There is no question that the University of Minnesota already has an outstanding venue for watching outdoor football,” said Vikings Vice President of Legal Affairs and Chief Administrative Officer Kevin Warren. “Each of these modifications, however, is essential to providing the proper NFL game day experience for our players, coaches and fans. We appreciate the University’s collaborative efforts to ensure TCF Bank Stadium is ready to host Vikings games this fall, and we look forward to playing outdoor football for the next two seasons.”
The list of modifications, among other items, includes a hydronic heated field, increased storage space throughout the facility, heating for various areas within the stadium, and concession upgrades in the stadium’s concourses. The Vikings will also install temporary bleachers to accommodate approximately 2,000 additional fans, bringing the total capacity to TCF Bank Stadium above 52,000. Construction is expected to begin at the beginning of March and will be completed in July.
Thus far, Vikings fans have reacted favorably to the transition to the University of Minnesota. Season ticket renewals are nearly 20% ahead of 2013 renewals.
