Eden Prairie, MN (March 2, 2016) – The Minnesota Vikings have named Karin Nelsen Vice President of Legal and Human Resources.
One of Minneapolis-St. Paul’s leaders in the legal community and a champion for diversity and inclusion, Nelsen will have direct responsibility for the day-to-day operations of the Vikings Legal and Human Resources Departments. She joins the team after spending the past 18 years with Cargill, most recently serving as Law Vice President & North America General Counsel, a title she held since 2012. During her tenure with Cargill, she helped establish a unified global team as she held leadership positions while based in Moscow, Geneva and Singapore before returning to the United States in 2012. She supported a broad range of Cargill businesses and geographies and provided antitrust expertise to Cargill’s businesses in the United States. She was recently elected as a member of the prestigious American Law Institute.
“I will always be grateful for having had the tremendous fortune to work at Cargill the past 18 years and to benefit from their profound investment in my development as a legal professional and a business leader,” said Nelsen. “To transition to the Vikings, an organization that is so embedded in the fabric of Minnesota and one that is on the precipice of transforming our great community in so many unique ways, is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity and an incredible fit. The cross cultural experience the last five years and the multitude of complex legal and business issues in which I have been involved have provided a tremendous foundation for me to apply my work with the Vikings as they continue to evolve and succeed.”
“In our constant commitment to building a world-class organization, bringing in an individual of Karin’s caliber is an exceptional addition for the Vikings,” said Vikings Chief Operating Officer Kevin Warren. “Karin has established an impeccable reputation not only in her field but also as an extremely effective and respected organizational leader. Her acumen in complex legal, business and human resources issues, as well as her dedication and passion for social responsibility, will be integral to our future growth. We are also proud to add to the Vikings family another individual who grew up in Minnesota and remains engaged within, and dedicated to, the Minneapolis-St. Paul community.”
Nelsen received her law degree from the University of Iowa College of Law and her undergraduate degree in accounting from Minnesota State University, Mankato. She is on the Board of Directors for the Iowa Law School Foundation, as well as St. David’s Center, an educational non-profit in Minneapolis. Nelsen worked as a litigator in Seattle and Minneapolis law firms before joining Cargill.
Nelsen becomes the Vikings third female vice president, joining Vice President of Partnership Activation and Special Projects Tanya Dreesen and Vice President of Finance and Controller Kate Shibilski.
