New Vikings Stadium News and Notes - December 13

Posted Dec 13, 2013

Today’s Minnesota Sports Facilities Authority (MSFA) board meeting introduced the following interesting tidbits regarding stadium construction:

Playing in the dirt…

· Over 70,000 cubic yards of soil weighing more than 100,000 tons have already been removed from the stadium site. In total roughly 900,000 cubic yards of soil are expected to be removed.

· Rather than being moved to an offsite location, much of the dirt is being stored directly across 4th street on surface parking lots until it is ready to be brought back to the site for use in 2014. The decision could save the project up to $800,000, according to Mortenson Construction Senior Vice President John Wood.

· Eighty (80) trucks are currently hauling dirt from 6:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m. every night from the site. The majority of the trucks are independently-owned and operated by Minnesotans, primarily women and minorities.

Time to say your goodbyes…

· The Metrodome’s official last day is scheduled for January 18, when the power will be turned off and the roof will deflate. Steve Maki, the MSFA’s director of facilities and engineering, estimates the roof will deflate in less than 30 minutes.

· Shortly after deflation, the Metrodome tear down will begin at the same time the concrete foundation for the new facility is being poured. Watch a demo of the construction process at the top of this page or by clicking here.

New stadium spurring development...

· On Friday, both the MSFA and the Minneapolis City Council unanimously approved a five-block, $400-million project that includes office towers, apartments, retail and a park directly adjacent to the new stadium. Expected to bring 5,000 workers downtown in 2016, the massive project will share a parking ramp with the new stadium, a significant point of emphasis for securing major events at the new stadium because skyways will now connect the facility to the entire downtown core.

What about all those seats?

· On Monday, December 16, the MSFA will release an RFP allowing vendors to bid on removing and selling Metrodome seats. The Vikings will continue to keep fans posted on stadium memorabilia.
