Mike,

What do you think the Vikings should do about Adrian Peterson's fumbling problem? Do you think an approach like Tiki Barber took would hurt AD's running style?

-- Bryan E., Tucson, AZ

I don’t think the Vikings need to alter their approach to coaching Peterson at all in light of the fumbles. It was clearly an issue that cost us at times this year, but as much as technique is to blame I also think Peterson got unlucky with several of his fumbles.

The parallel that’s drawn to Tiki Barber is an easy one but to me it’s overdone. It’s a matter of Peterson gaining more experience and perfecting his technique. I don’t see it as a major problem for him as we go forward, but it is something he needs to fix before next season.

With injuries to Antoine Winfield and Cedric Griffin,is there any chance Charles Gordon could re-emerge? Was that foot injury career ending,or does he have a chance to make it back?
-- Grant, Brooklyn Park

Interesting question because I hadn’t considered this possibility before Grant suggested it. For those who don’t remember, Gordon suffered a gruesome ankle injury during the 2008 season and hasn’t been back on the field since. I haven’t spoken with him since the 2008 season so I don’t have any idea how far along he is in his rehab.

Gordon was a good player for the Vikings, so if he’s back up to speed I wouldn’t be surprised at all to see him at training camp this year. But that’s a big “if.” As a CB and punt returner, he relies heavily on his speed and agility, and his ability to be fast and quick was severely hindered because of that ankle injury.

I am a huge Vikings fan and I love Adrian, but doesn't it look like the Vikings line him up as a single back far deeper than most other teams? Maybe I am crazy, but it sure looks like he lines up a yard or two deeper than just about every other RB, and it seems to hurt his chances. Am I crazy, half blind or what?
-- Greg A.

I don’t think you’re crazy or half blind, Greg. But I can tell you that Peterson lines up at standard depths on all of his plays. In the Vikings offense, the RB lines up either 5 yards behind the ball or 7 yards, depending on the personnel grouping, formation and specific play call. These depths (5 yards and 7 yards) are standard across the vast majority of pro-style offenses.

Each year teams look to get better through the draft. As the Vikings currently sit, what 2 or 3 positions do you see them targeting early in this year's draft? A Pat Williams replacement or maybe some extra help at cornerback?

-- Jay V., Ames, IA

I know this message gets boring, but it’s as true as it is boring – the Vikings will draft the best player available when it’s their turn to select.

With that being said, I do think the Vikings will look to address their secondary either in the draft or immediately after the draft when they’re scrambling to sign undrafted free agents. I’m thinking Pat Williams will be back, so DT isn’t an immediate need, especially if Jimmy Kennedy is re-signed.

Other positions that might be addressed similarly to the secondary are LB, OL and QB.
