Mock Madness 2.0

Posted Mar 21, 2011

For the 4th consecutive year, vikings.com is feeding off of college basketball’s March Madness by creating a weekly feature titled “Mock Madness” that will track the draft opinions of several prognosticators.

Mock Madness 1.0 was unveiled earlier and this week Mock Madness 2.0 is ready to go.

Though the draft is still several weeks away, now is the time to speculate about which teams will take which players. Will the Panthers take a QB with the 1st overall pick? Or will they choose between blue-chip DTs Marcell Dareus and Nick Fairley? Which highly-regarded players will slide and who will be the surprise early selection? Most importantly, who will the Vikings take with pick #12?

While no one can provide a concrete answer to those questions just yet, plenty of NFL followers will certainly take a guess. And instead of spending an endless amount of time searching the internet for ideas on what will be available when the Vikings are on the clock, you can check vikings.com every week to get an update on what everyone is projecting.

Without further ado, here is Mock Madness 2.0!

NFL.com – Pat Kirwan
Kirwan changed his mind on the individual the Vikings will select with pick #12, but he didn’t change his mind on the position. OT Tyron Smith will be the Vikings choice, according to Kirwan, as he says the Southern Cal lineman “jumped to the head of the class for some teams when he weighed in at more than 300 pounds and had 29 reps on the bench press to go along with his game tapes. The Vikings need a quarterback in the worst way, but I don't think they reach for one here.”
Last week’s projection:
OT Nate Solder

NFL.com – Charles Davis (not updated)
Davis and Kirwan couldn’t even agree on who would be the #1 pick (Kirwan says Da’Quan Bowers, Davis says Cam Newton), so it’s no surprise they don’t have the same projection for the Vikings at #12. Davis goes on the defensive side for the Vikings, projecting DE Adrian Clayborn as the team’s pick.

ESPN.com – Mel Kiper, Jr., Todd McShay
ESPN’s pair of draftniks don’t often agree on much, including whom the Vikings will select at #12. In his most recent mock draft, Kiper, Jr. projects DE Robert Quinn as the selection. “Minnesota has other needs, but if they remain here, a value like Quinn -- literally a guy who some might consider a potential No. 1 overall pick -- is too much to pass up at this position in the draft,” Kiper, Jr. says.
Last week’s projection:
DE Robert Quinn

McShay, on the other hand, goes to the other side of the ball in his prediction. He sees OT Anthony Castanzo as the selection, saying he “should be ready to contribute right away and play on either side.”
Last week’s projection:
DE Robert Quinn

SI.com – Don Banks
Sports Illustrated’s
Don Banks isn’t messing around with defensive players or offensive linemen who might not start as rookies. He goes straight to the position most Vikings fans want their team to address with pick #12 – QB. Banks predicts Jake Locker will be the Vikings selection, saying the “The Vikings seem intrigued with the ex-Washington star and with only Joe Webb on their QB depth chart, they're definitely motivated to snatch up the draft's third-rated passer.”
Last week's projection: QB Jake Locker

CBSsports.com – Rob Rang, Chad Reuter
We’ll follow a pair of writers from this outlet during draft season. Rang sides with SI.com’s Don Banks in saying the Vikings will take QB Jake Locker at #12.
Last week’s projection:
QB Ryan Mallet

Reuter, on the other hand, says the Vikings will go defense with their 1st-round pick and select DE Robert Quinn.
Last week’s projection:
OT Tyron Smith

NationalFootballPost.com – Wes Bunting
Bunting throws out a possibility I haven’t seen anywhere else, predicting the Vikings will take DE Da’Quan Bowers. He’s projected by many to be a top 3 pick, maybe even to the Panthers with the #1 pick, but Bunting says “Bowers is the one name I keep hearing as a possible faller come draft day. His medical is a concern and not every team thinks he’s a great fit for a 34 front. However, at pick 12, he would be a welcome addition in Minnesota.”
Last week’s projection: QB Blaine Gabbert
