Jan. 28, 2010 (MINNEAPOLIS) Minneapolis Mayor R.T. Rybak is proclaiming Friday, Jan. 29 as “Vikings Appreciation Day” in Minneapolis. Folks are encouraged to wear purple and gold on Friday to celebrate one of the most exciting seasons in Vikings history.
“I’m proud of the Vikings for their spectacular season and in Minneapolis, we’re grateful to them for taking us along on a great adventure that led all the way up to the NFC Championship Game,” said Mayor Rybak “As a result, I’m very pleased to proclaim Friday as ‘Vikings Appreciation Day.’ Once again, I ask everyone in downtown Minneapolis, on campus and across the City to wear purple tomorrow and show off our Vikings pride one more time at the end of this great season.”
This Minnesota Vikings season was one for the record books, with the team winning back-to-back division championships for the first time in more than 30 years and playing in the NFC Championship game for the first time since 2000. Ten players earned Pro Bowl honors while four players were named All-Pro.
Also this season, more fans followed Vikings games than ever before—both locally and nationally. The team’s home game against the Green Bay Packers on ESPN broke a record as the most-watched cable television event in history, and the NFC Championship game in New Orleans averaged 57.9 million viewers nationwide. That’s the most of any championship game since 1981.
