How Did the Vikings Turn 8 Into 10?

At the Combine in February, Vikings GM Rick Spielman disclosed that his goal was to end up with “double digit” selections in the 2014 NFL Draft. A few months later, Spielman and his staff accomplished the goal, coming away from the draft with 10 selections after starting with eight.

Here’s a look at the four trades that put the Vikings in a position to come away with 10 selections…

1st Round – Traded Back with Cleveland Browns
Vikings acquire: 1st Round (No. 9) 5th Round (No. 145)
Browns acquire: 1st Round (No. 8)

To move back one spot from No. 8 to No. 9, the Vikings acquired an extra 5th-round pick (No. 145). At No. 9, the Vikings selected LB Anthony Barr and at No. 145 the Vikings selected OG David Yankey. The Browns selected CB Justin Gilbert at No. 8.

1st Round – Traded Up with Seattle Seahawks
Vikings acquire: 1st Round (No. 32)
Seahawks acquire: 2nd Round (No. 40) 4th Round (No. 108)

The Vikings traded up to the last spot in the 1st round (No. 32) to select QB Teddy Bridgewater, giving up a 2nd-round pick (No. 40) and a 4th-round pick (No. 108). Seattle eventually traded away No. 40, as well, and took DE Cassius Marsh with No. 108.

5th Round – Traded Back with Carolina Panthers
Vikings acquire 5th Round (No. 168) 7th Round (No. 225)
Carolina acquires 5th Round (No. 148)

The Vikings moved back 20 spots in the 5th round, sending Carolina No. 148 in exchange for No. 168 and a 7th-round pick (No. 225). Carolina selected CB Bene Benwikere at No. 148. The Vikings traded back once again at No. 168 (Atlanta), then selected at CB Jabari Price at No. 225.

5th Round – Traded Back with Atlanta Falcons
Vikings acquire 6th Round (No. 182) 7th Round (No. 220)
Atlanta acquires 5th Round (No. 168)

The Vikings doubled down on a trade earlier in the 5th round, taking the pick they originally acquired from Carolina and trading it to Atlanta in exchange for a 6th-round choice (No. 182) and a 7th-round choice (No. 220). Atlanta selected LB Marquis Spruill at No. 168 and the Vikings selected DB Antone Exum at No. 182 and DT Shamar Stephen at No. 220.
