Game Preview: Vikings vs. Raiders

Head Coach Mike Zimmer will make his debut with the Minnesota Vikings (5-10-1 in 2013) as they open the 2014 NFL preseason against the Oakland Raiders (4-12 in 2013) this Friday, August 8. Kickoff is set for 7:00 p.m. CT.

Friday’s game will mark the beginning of Zimmer’s NFL head coaching career. It will be the fifth time the Vikings have met the Raiders in the preseason. The Vikings are 3-1 in preseason games and 4-10 in regular season play against Oakland.

This will also be the first game of the Vikings two-year stay on the campus of the University of Minnesota. The Vikings will play the 2014 and 2015 seasons at TCF Bank Stadium while the team’s new stadium is being built downtown at the same site as the Metrodome. Next Saturday the Vikings will host Arizona while Oakland will host Detroit.

The Vikings added 40 new faces to the roster since the conclusion of the 2013 season, including 10 players selected in the 2014 NFL Draft. The Vikings selected two players in the 1st round of the draft, LB Anthony Barr (#9 overall) and QB Teddy Bridgewater (#32 overall).

* QB Matt Cassel completed 18-of-30 passes for 218 yards, 4 touchdowns, 1 interception and a 108.1 passer rating with the Chiefs on 12/14/08.
* CB Derek Cox intercepted a Carson Palmer pass against Oakland on 10/21/12.
* WR Greg Jennings caught an 80-yard touchdown pass on 12/09/2007. He finished the game with 2 receptions for 100 yards.
* LB Chad Greenway recorded a career-best 22 tackles and 4.0 tackles for loss against Oakland on 11/20/11.

• Vikings offensive coordinator Norv Turner was the head coach of the Raiders from 2004-05.

• Vikings defensive backs coach Jerry Gray and Raiders assistant defensive backs coach Marcus Robertson coached together in Tennessee in 2011. Gray served as the defensive coordinator and Robertson was the secondary coach.
• Vikings defensive coordinator George Edwards and Raiders linebackers coach Bob Sanders have a long history of working together. Sanders coached Edwards at Duke from 1986-89. Edwards got his first coaching experience under Sanders at Florida in 1991. Sanders coached outside linebackers when Edwards served as the defensive coordinator in Buffalo from 2010-11.
• Vikings head coach Mike Zimmer and Raiders assistant head coach/ offensive line coach Tony Sparano coached together in Dallas from 2004-06.

• Vikings head coach Mike Zimmer and Raiders offensive coordinator Greg Olson coached together at Washington State in 1989. Zimmer was the defensive coordinator while Olson had his first coaching job as a graduate assistant.
• Raiders T Menelik Watson played with Vikings CB Xavier Rhodes and WR Rodney Smith in 2012. The trio capped their final collegiate season with a victory over Northern Illinois in the Orange Bowl.
• Vikings G Austin Wentworth blocked for Raiders QB David Carr at Fresno State from 2011-13.
• Raiders DE Shelby Harris was teammates with Vikings WR Ty Walker and LB Mike Zimmer at Illinois State from 2010-12.
• Vikings G David Yankey and Raiders FB Jeremy Stewart were teammates at Stanford in 2010 while Raiders offensive assistant Nick Holz served as the schools offensive assistant/quarterbacks coach.
