Over the next several days leading up to the launch of the 2014 League Year on Tuesday, March 11, vikings.com will unveil its 2014 Free Agency Preview. NFL.com has ranked the top 100 free agents in this year’s class, and our preview will use those rankings to set the stage. As always, we encourage readers to use the space below the story to submit their thoughts.
This year’s class of free agent cornerbacks contains an interesting blend of established veterans in their prime (Davis, Talib, Verner), young players looking to become starters (Shields, Thurmond), and veterans looking to extend their careers (Munnerlyn, Tillman). Are any of them a good fit for the Vikings?
NFL.com’s Top 10 Free Agent CBs (overall ranking)
1. Alterraun Verner (8)
A Pro Bowler last season, Verner finished second in the League in PBUs and held opposing QBs to a 55.8 passer rating. Will he follow his former defensive coordinator, Jerry Gray (now the Vikings DBs coach), to Minnesota?
2. Aqib Talib (10)
3. Vontae Davis (13)
Davis will enter his sixth season in 2014 and will be just 26 when it begins; he has 13 career INTs and matches up well with the NFL’s bigger receivers.
4. Sam Shields (20)
5. Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie (27)
6. Walter Thurmond (37)
He was Seattle’s nickel back this past season and now is poised to earn a starting job somewhere else. It will be interesting to see if former Seattle Defensive Coordinator and now Jaguars Head Coach Gus Bradley shows any interest in his former player’s ability to become a starting cornerback.
7. Captain Munnerlyn (52)
8. Tarell Brown (57)
9. Charles Tillman (71)
A former division rival, Tillman seems like a good fit in Tampa Bay. But he’s a turnover machine and would be a good fit for any team that doesn’t mind signing a 33-year old veteran to play cornerback.
Other notables: Brandon Browner (84), Nolan Carroll, Antoine Cason, Brandon Ghee, Corey Graham (87), Jabari Greer, Tracy Porter, Aaron Ross, Asante Samuel (94)
